Problems with Chrome

I’m having a lot of problems using Chome and the boards lately, and wondered if it was just me, or anyone else was having these issues.

  1. Back button doesn’t work. In many cases, hitting the back button while reading a thread only seems to reload the page, or take me back to the top of the page. This seems to be very flaky - sometimes it does actually take me back to where I want to go.

  2. I keep getting logged out and have to log in again. Again, randomly, I keep getting logged out. Now I don’t know if the problem is Chrome, my current setup, or add-ons.

This is more a “anyone else having these issues?” type question, really. I suppose I can always use Firefox, but I sort of like Chrome for browsing the boards.

I’m definitely seeing #1. I think it started when I installed a popup blocker and adblock, but I’m not sure (since, as you said, it’s kind of unpredictable). It actually seems to happen more here than elsewhere.

Number 2 sounds like a problem with cookies. Make sure you have them enabled for this site, and that you’re not deleting them with any other program, such as Ccleaner.

I’m using Chrome with no problems at all, for what it’s worth. I’ve got Javascript enabled (I have it off by default) and I’m running Adblock and Ghostery. If I were to guess where the back button problems come from, it would be a redirect in one of the ad scripts, meaning that going back takes you to the redirect, which takes you to the page you’re currently on.

When I’ve had trouble with the back button, I look at the dropdown and usually there is one or two ad server links. So what is happening is you hit back, it goes back one tick, which was an ad server callout, and thus you stay on the same board page and it looks like nothing happened. You hit back again, and it hits the previous ad server. It takes two or three backs to get to the page before. Or I can go to the dropdown and jump back manually past all the ads.

Haven’t had that problem in a while, though.

This is no help, but I use Chrome with none of the problems you’re posting about. I would clean the cookie file and see if there is still a problem.

I can confirm that I am also having problem #1 in the list.

Haven’t seen these problems … yet … and I use Chrome nearly 100% of the time.

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing difficulties.

I would try clearing cookies – that seems to solve a lot of problems.

Maybe see if Chrome has an update as well.

Please try some of these things and let us know if this improves the situation.

Again, sorry you’re having problems. To the best of my knowledge nothing has changed here from the same ol’ same ol’.

I use Chrome and never have problems with the back button, but then again, I have a membership and I don’t see the ads, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I don’t think so, because I’m having the issue but I am also a paid member and don’t see ads. (Although I have Adblock running, so I wouldn’t see them anyway.)

I’m using Chrome with Adblock and Smooth Gestures. I have to actually hit the back button to go back, the mouse gesture doesn’t work.

There have been known problems with Chrome and the back button for some time. The situation can be improved by going to the Tools menu, Settings and Under the Hood and switching “Predict network actions to improve page load performance” to off. This improved things substantially for me, but I still get some problems.

Thanks! I’ve adjusted this setting and so far it seems to be working.

I came here to post this discovery, but I see I’ve been beaten to it! It does seem to make a lot of difference to the first issue, without having an impact on performance, as far as I can see.

I cannot believe that Google is taking so long to resolve the Back button problem with Chrome; there are complaining posts that are almost a year old.

Still trying to find the cause of issue #2.

I’ve heard of this problem before here even without Chrome. IIRC, since the page loads ads, and does it over and over, you’re just going back to the previous page that had the previous ad, and so forth.

As for getting logged out randomly, it happens to me all the time. Sometimes I can’t even read an entire thread without getting logged off. And it’s not a cookie issue, it’s a vbulletin issue that they can’t or won’t fix or address. But this happens to me on every board I visit (except my own vbulletin, which keeps me logged in indefinitely as long as the browser isn’t closed).

I’m sure there’s a reason for that, but so far, none have been forthcoming with the answer, unless I missed it.
