Processor Installation

I’ve got two computers and I’m trying to switch their processors. One has a 486 33MHz processor, and the other 486 66MHz. Each works properly on their original computers. When I swap them, the 33MHz works properly, but the 66MHz doesn’t. When I try to boot up the 66MHz processor, it does one of two things

A) Computer makes all the regular start-up noises… The fan starts, the CD spins, etc. Nothing appears on the monitor
B) Computer starts up, shows the regular boot-up screen with the correct processor model written, tests RAM, shadows video and system bios, says “Previous boot incomplete - Default configuration used”, and stops there. I can enter setup, but when I exit, I just get a screen with the blicking cursor thing.

B happens about 1/4 of the time.

I checked the 66MHz processor in the original computer, and it still works. The place where the processor goes in the two computers is identical, but the 66MHz processor has spikes on both sides, while the 33MHz processor has spikes on one side and is black with a white “Intel” on the other.

So my question is: Is there anything I can do to make it work, or do I just have to accept that the processor is not compatiable with that computer?

Hopefully someone MUCH more knowledgeable than me will be along soon, but for now, it’ll be the blind leading the blind. The problem may lie with the jumpers that determine the multiplier between the system bus speed and the processor speed. For example, if the system bus is 100 MHz, a 500 MHz processor would have the jumpers set at 5 and a 450 MHZ would have them at 4.5. In the PC I’m upgrading right now, there is a little table on the motherboard showing how to set each of the jumper pairs for whatever multiplier I want to use. For example, a multiplier of 3.5 would require the four pairs to be “on,off,on,off.”

I literally figured this stuff out just today, and I haven;t tried othe new processor yet, so I’d wait 'til someone else confirms what I said (or slaps me upside the head with the right answer). In the meantine, I found the website http://www.arstechnica.com to be useful.

Thanks for asking this question, because the answers people post here will probably be useful for me too!

P.S. I am installing a processor in Slot 1-- it could be totally different for different slots.
