I was thrilled in 2001 when Moulin Rouge brought the movie musical back to life, and got nominated for an Oscar.
I was ecstatic in 2002 when Chicago went one step further and brilliantly brought a great stage musical to the silver screen, and people saw it, and it won the Oscar.
2003 was pretty dismal for movie musicals though, what with “From Justin to Kelly” possibly scaring off future movie musicals.
I believe 2004 will see Phantom of the Opera.
And apparently in 2005 we’ll be getting a movie version of the musical “The Producers” with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.
I’ve heard various rumors of Bye Bye Birdie, Guys and Dolls, Pippin, Rent and Sweeny Todd, but have no idea how close these are to fruition.
