We have moved to Linux several times, and I always end up going back to Windows because I need some program or other that we don’t have for Linux. I’d like to change permenantly. Can you help me find these things?
Webcam Software. I currently use Webcam32 to upload my cam images to my page. I like the caption and overlay features. I like that I can turn the ftp on and off without closing the program. I like the local save feature. Webcam software is one of few things that I like to have a lot of features for.
Form-filling Software. I currently use RoboForm. I like that I can have several profiles so that with a click of a button I can fill in a form for ordering merchandise (with my real name and real address, etc.), or fill in lots of fake info to join a service without getting junk mail. RoboForm also has lots of different kinds of info that it stores; it is far superior to Gator.
Multi-Platform Messenger. I currently use Trillian. I need to be able to connect to AIM, ICQ, Yahoo!, MSN and IRC.
Music Player. Something like Winamp. I have several players already, but I don’t understand how any of them work.
I just want to play MP3s!
Have you tried Freshmeat? Most everything you listed will be there and a lot of that is installed on most distributions today.

xmms is a music player that comes with most linux distributions, and it is almost EXACTLY like winamp in functionality, looks, etc.
Webcam Software.
There is a shell program called “webcam” that comes with the xawtv package that I think does all that. The only problem is that it’s shell based so you’ll need to read it’s man page to work it out.
Form-filling Software.
I know mozilla (and galeon, which I use) will remember login’s and passwords but not the other stuff. If memory serves, I think opera will remember that other stuff for you.
Multi-Platform Messenger.
GAIM will be your new best friend. It can do all those IM protocals.
Music Player.
As someone else said, XMMS is the defacto music player for Linux. It handles mp3s, oggs, etc and can even use your Winamp skins.
Linux is rather different then Windows in the fact that you have to get under the hood sometimes and deal directly with the command line but once you learn it It can be wonderful.
HTH
Thanks, sigSEGV. I will look there.
And I am kind of getting used to XMMS. I haven’t actually played anything on it, yet, because all of my MP3s are on the Windows side and Dh has it set up so that I don’t have permissions for that. Thaaaanks, love.
Oh, FyreFiend, as far as I can tell, the version of GAIM that came with our Linux distro only does AIM? I do have Everybuddy, but it’s brok-ed. I think I need to get a new version or something, and I am unskilled at installing programs on Linux.
GAIM only does AIM by default - to get it to use other protocols you have to load the plugin for that system. You go to plugins->load and then find your way to the proper protocols directory, on my Redhat system it’s /usr/lib/gaim/
Then you select the lib<protocol>.so file for whichever protocol that you need, like ‘libyahoo.so’ for Yahoo Messenger.
It’s rather annoying, I’ll admit. It would be much nicer if the people who made the binaries would compile in the popular protocols. Apart from that I love gaim- it does a lot, and the logging feature is the best I’ve seen.
What linux distribution are you running? The installer systems vary quite a bit, but I’ve found that most people can figure out the Mandrake installer, and red-carpet, which comes with the Ximian Gnome system. The Debian apt-get system is very powerful, but not really all that newbie friendly.
Oh, wow, that is so cool… All of these different things that I can add to GAIM. It does Napster???
I have no idea what distro we have. But Dh said that he is going to show me how to install things tonight when he gets home from work.
