Projects started but have yet to finish... please tell me I'm not the only one.

On the weekend I finally got around to mucking out the spare room (slash computer room slash storage room). Came across several projects that I’ve started but have yet to finish.

  1. A B-52 Bomber (quite large) made out of balsa wood. Bought it from a hobby store years (and years) ago. It’s about 65% complete.

  2. A Honda something-or-other motorcycle (plastic model kit). This too is about 65% complete.

  3. Another plastic model kit - this one is a 6-cylinder motor (yep, as in just the car motor). This is 80% complete. Made a fatal error during construction so it’s not likely to be completed. Too bad really as it was a “real working model”, you turn a crank and see the pistons move up and down.

  4. A quilt-type bed spread. Kinda like needle point meets crocheting (sp?) except the needle is much bigger and the “canvas” will fit over a double bed. Sadly, I only accomplished about 10% before shelving this one.

  5. A two-storey (smallish) wood dollhouse. About 90% complete - got bored with the shingles and trimming.

  6. A three-storey (large) wood dollhouse. This one was purchased when my neice was about two months old. I had planned to give it to her when she’s old enough. Have about 10% done. My neice has just turned four so I think I’ve got a couple of years yet. Oh, also purchased all the furniture kits at the same time. Happy to report that the furniture is all done.

There’s more but I believe I’ve shamed myself enough for now. In my defense, the one’s I’ve finished are:

  • two motorcyle kits: a Harley Davidson and a police cruiser.
  • another car motor (this one a bit smaller).

Please tell me I’m not the only one with this trait? My husband is constantly nagging me about the unfinished projects I’m stackin up (don’t get started on his list of unfinished projects).

Heck, I have lots of these. The biggest and most obvious is our living room, which is about 80% remodeled. It was started well over a year ago. Long boards that are intended to be floor and crown trim are lying along the walls. Door frames are exposed. No real reason it hasn’t been finished, except that we haven’t seemed to get around to it. It was last worked on in December.

Crafts and such, I have several, including a few I intend to complete every Christmas (they are becoming traditions in their own right).

There are still boxes in my walk-in closet from where I was packing up my winter clothes last spring. They never got put away, and didn’t get back out over the winter either. A sensible person would think that this proves they could be disposed of without ill effect, since I obviously don’t need or wear them. In all likelihood, that will not happen.

I wanted to hang a shelf in a closet, so I took everything out of the closet. Everything sat around the room for about six months. Last month, however, I actually picked up the drill, spent ten minutes putting in screws, and finished the job. So don’t lose hope; it does happen (just not very often).

Oh heck yeah! I’ve got at least six canvases in various states of completion littering my workspace.

The problem is I’ll get all fired up for a project and I’ll tear into it with wild abandon, do a blast of work in a weekend, then have to wait two weeks for the oil paints to dry, and while thats happening I lose all enthuasium for the job.

Incidently, I always wondered if anybody ever bought those Revel “visible piston engines”.

My husband got me one of those 3D puzzles two Christmases ago. I sorted the pieces, and it’s just kind of fizzled out from there. My dad, the compulsive, yet clueless spender, decided I liked them and bought me about 5 more, which are all unopened in my closet. One day, I will give up and give them all away to poor, but worthy, puzzle addicts.

Your are definitly NOT the only one, MLAW.

My list on unfinished projects includes:

Candles I bought to decorate to use a X-mas gifts: in the closet
Ornaments to decorate for same reason: same place
Latch hook rug started at age 10, :o :still not done

and most telling:
“Junk room” converted into a guest room… well it has a bed. :o
Chrisbar

I love them!
But they are more fun to do with extra people…especially extra people who have had a lot to drink.

They go really fast that way… you can get a couple together in one night… and have a great time.

Yep, that’s me. Also have the “visible women”. To my credit I did finish that one. Painted and everything.

Missing from my previous list:
7) A model of a train (“The General”, if memory serves). This is another large scale plastic model consistinf of the engine and a coal car. It’s about 35% complete. Went all out on this one, even bought all the paint needed to finish.

  1. Plastic canvas kits/patterns/etc. TOO numerous to mention.

  2. Two oil paint-by-numbers and one acrylic paint-by-number.

I’m not even going to get into the many many PC Games I’ve purchased, installed, played gung-ho for a few days, then abondoned, never to be launched again. I’ve only finished one game (start to finish) and its MOO (Masters of Orion).

Sad, huh?

yes, I always get tired before I finish… I never seem to finish anything…

Well, I started this post and it’s incomple

I’ve always finished the small cross-stitch patterns I’ve started. Maybe I was motivated because they were all gifts for other people. But I never finished the unicorn or the Star Maiden. I did finish the dragon…but I’ve never gotten it framed.

Mlaw, I wish mine were models, but they’re not. I, currently have 3 VW’s(a 63 convert chop-top, a 68 hardtop chop-top and a 63 23 window van), that are all laying about in different stages of completion.

My brother and I started working on the hard-top about a month and a half ago so we can do some autocross racing. The motor is complete now, the interior is still gutted(we have everything but the seats), the bodywork is immense…

The 63 has been given up on(anyone want it? it’s free…just come pick it up! :)).

In the last 2 months, I’ve been searching desperately for someone to restore my 23 window…all to no avail. I even created a website that show all of the rust! http://www.local420.net/63/project63.htm

And, I also have several older projects that are not car related. My backyard is in a state of dissarray, and I have a lamp that my father started before passing that I have yet to run the wiring for.

Yeeesh…thatks for reminding me of the procrastinator I am!

You sound like my dad. grin

My unfinished projects include (but this is in no way a complete list):

One pink silk summer dress with a gorgeous shape and a nice waistline - and only half a skirt, and only one sleeve.

One black flowered summer dress, also silk but a lighter weight, complete save for a (missing!) sleeve.

Several rather intricate pieces of beadweaving of various stitches

One red purse (full-size) which was supposed to be embroidered with beads, but which I never even managed to finish sewing.

An Epson Stylus printer, which I was going to replace the black inkhead to and never got around to it.

A BigIP which we were going to put a harddrive into and use as a firewall, but which we haven’t even bought the damn drive for (let alone the cables so we can use both cards in it without killing ourselves).

A very very large roll of upholstery fabric, with which I was going to cover both of our 'comfychair’s. Never even cut anything off of it.

Several now-dead plants which were supposed to go into big pots and sit next to our door.

the dishes.
the laundry.
seeing the floor in any room in my apartment.

Saving up to pay for a maid so I don’t have to do that one.

and many others…
(what, me? Procrastinate? I’ll deny it tomorrow.)

You want unfinished projects? HA! May I offer…my dining room, which has been empty and under renovation for {drumroll} 7 years. Got the plaster work done; the floors refinished; the windows removed, stripped, sashweights rehung and all repainted. All that remains is a little work on the baseboards and then it’s ready to paint and paper.

Yes, I do have a dining room to use; the big, honkin’ mahoganey dining set inherited from my great-aunt has been sitting in the middle parlor for 12 years. So it isn’t like I’m eating off the floor. But you have to hike through this construction zone (complete with collapsible scaffolding) to get from the kitchen to the table.

Gad, this is pitiful. This thread just motivated me to get out the heatgun and sanding block and get the damned thing DONE!

Blushing in mortification,
Veb

I hate to mention this because it just shows what a procrastinator I am.

Two years ago, I tore out two sections of drywall in my hallway so I could build bookshelves into the wall. Since then, I have acquired the following (all unused):

A new circular saw, a set of folding metal sawhorses that each hold a half ton, a cordless drill and FOUR sets of bits, three new hammers of various types, two bags of nails of different types “in case I need them”, enough wood to build a whole hallway including all the damn molding pieces.

End result? I still have this huge gaping space in my wall with nothing done on it at all. I HAVE managed to remodel my kitchen and bathroom. And I’m going to redo most of the kitchen again this year!

Also, five computers of various types that are always in the process of being “rebuilt” yet none of which work.

And you know what? I never got around to fi

Ohhhh! Give them to me! Please? Mr. Rilch and I love puzzles!

Hi, my name is Shirley and I am short attention span woman.
:::all the other short attention span people in the room say::: HI SHIRLEY:::::
I have never, except twice, finished a story that I’ve started.

I have the front of a quilt done ( courtesy of my mother in law) that I’ve never gotten around to putting a back on it and stuffing.

I have one of those " make a dress for a little girl in 2 hours" patterns that is now in its 4th year of languishing. (Started when the little girl was in utero and she will be 3 this month.)

All the things for a wine making experience except a specific pot that seems to be required.

I have several bags of yarn from when I was in a crochet phase. I have a rose colored blanket for my daughter 2/3rds done and the motivation to finish is dwindling. I really should just get rid of the yarn.

Lots and lots of cut out patterns for really cool bibs to give as gifts to friends, but well…I never finished.
Because I have no patience and my mind flits about like a butterfly in a tornado, I do not do crafts or have an interest in cooking (although it has taken me a bunch of money investing into a variety of things to realize this.)

The few things I have accomplished in my life are a source of great pride to me:

  1. A book I made ( verse and a cutting out pictures) for my son about little sisters. Have received nothing but glowing compliments on. Thinking of sending it in to see if I can get published. ( If I don’t win the big game tonight, I will.)

  2. My garden last year.

I would like to pass on this suggestion to other Craft or Projectically Challenged individuals like myself.

When you see a project that “looks like fun” in a magazine, cut it out and put it into a folder of things to do when I get my Ridalyn. I have a fat binder, complete with the transparent protective sheets to keep these little gem of project ideas safe, to take out every so often and say,
“Gee, * that * was a great idea that I never got around too, and the fad for it has passed. I sure saved alot of time, money, running around and effort by being a half witted fool.”

Your self esteem will thank you.

FTR, today I started and finished a project that was completely spontaneous: I put a duct tape covering over a shoe box. I’m not really sure why I did this, but now the thing is bomb proof.

Where to start?
I need to finish waterproofing my deck…1/2 done.
I have 8 rolls of wallpaper in my bathroom, not one of them on the wall. I bought a carpet cleaner, moved stuff onto the unwaterproof deck, didn’t clean the carpet and left everything in the rain. I don’t want to think about all the unused fabric and yarn. I have several hundred muslin squares and even more colored ones for a quilt that is currently 2 feet by 5 feet…

Last night, I resurrected the aforementioned Star Maiden, and actually did a few rows!
