Prometheus discussion with open spoilers [edited title]

I think you go out of your way to misread posts. Lamia said that the conversation was originally more balanced, but people like you constantly attacking our issues has soured the conversation and made it more negative.

He didn’t cop to anything, unintentional or not.

Since you have consistently characterized just about every criticism of the movie in this thread as Internet groupthink, I think different opinions about this movie do bother you, quite a lot.

Really, I’m not mad about it or whatever, I’m just telling you that from my perspective you have been really severely overreacting to other people’s posts in this thread.

The more people who keep pointing out the same flaws, the more evidence that there are actually no flaws at all and that any impression of flaws is the result of mass hysteria!

You’re coming off as obsessive and weird to every single other person reading the thread, just fyi.

Uh, no, that’s pretty much the opposite of what has happened here. You, and I do mean you personally and not the general “you”, have been so obnoxious and so inept in your attempts to defend Prometheus that you have managed to both diminish my respect for fans of the film and convince me that there really is no good explanation or excuse for the things about it that I consider problematic. In other words, I liked this movie better before you started trying to convince us that it was a modern classic.

Different opinions on movies clearly bother you a lot, as you’ve devoted post after post to ranting about people who don’t share yours on Prometheus. If you were hoping to encourage anyone to think about this movie in a more favorable light then this was the exact wrong approach to take.

Jesus. I really like the movie in spite of the plotholes. It was very pretty and the sound was great too. The fact that this thread is a million posts long must mean its a pretty popular movie either way I spose.

I’ve basically only complained about the movie in this thread, and I was very disappointed with it, but in the interest of balance, I will say that Fassbender’s performance was very very good.

I’ll probably watch the movie again just for that.

Husband and I saw the film about a week ago and discussed all of these same things upon leaving the theater. I enjoyed the original Alien and sequels to varying degrees, but didn’t go in expecting or particularly wanting “an alien movie.” I was excited like everyone else to see what Ridley Scott would do in that universe. Within the first half hour I went from somewhat perplexed to bored to irritated and spent the rest of the movie waiting for everyone to get killed so we could go home. I agreed then, as now, that the visuals were stunning and the performances were as good as they could be, considering what they had to work with (Fassbender in particular), but the script was so terrible I honestly believed the film would be a tremendous flop and that nobody could possibly consider this film a respectable piece of cinema.

Far from “Internet groupthink,” it was truly shocking to me to find out later that people actually liked the movie. I couldn’t and still can’t understand it. It’s not a matter of taste, or passion. It is quantifiably, objectively,** a bad movie**. Okay, I can understand just wanting to sit back and let the set design and art direction and effects wash over you…hey however you like to spend your time. But to try to argue the story has merits? Or that there is, in fact, a story? That, I don’t get.

It’s good to see that the majority, at least here, seem to agree with all the things we discussed after that first viewing, if maybe some of you are more charitable toward the film than I am.

Get a fucking life.

Hey, everyone. This thread reads one hell of a lot better when you can’t read certain poster’s comments.

Just sayin’.

Saw it last night in 3D, and agree that it was visually stunning but perplexingly flawed for reasons that have already been discussed in depth in this thread. I’d still give it a 3/5 for the spectacle (including that of Charlize Theron in a form-fitting space wetsuit).

The complaints about Shaw’s miraculous recovery moments after subjecting herself to major surgery are misguided, though. We all saw her inject herself with a couple of powerups that obviously restored her health bar to 100%.

I could quote more examples than this, but everybody in this thread needs to cool it immediately. This is a discussion of the thread, and insulting commentary on other posters is not wanted.

In it’s second week of release, Prometheus has made $89 million in domestic box office and $128 million in foreign box office (it’s been number one in Great Britain for three weeks running). Prometheus dropped 60 percent from its opening week but still came in no. 2 after the G rated Madagascar, beating out “Rock of Ages” on its initial weekend.

So, yah, popular. Probably room for a sequel of they want to take a shot at it.

Yeah, i’ll watch it again, he was the best part of the film. Just to me, it was so close, it could have been a classic like the first one if some things were done different.

Just saw it, thought I’d throw my two cents in. Mister Vigilante and I both hated it and compared its level of worthiness to be on par with the Matrix sequels. In fact, the more we discussed it, the more worked up he got about how horrible it was.

They could have cut Charlize Theron out of the film entirely and it would have made no difference. The “abortion” where the machine was set up for men only, missed that whole “there’s a uterus you have to cut through also” part when it stapled her up. David sounded like HAL.

I don’t even remember anyone’s characters names except David. That’s how little I cared about their characters.

Here’s the rest of how I feel about it.

That link was funny. Sigh. Yeah, the movie dropped the ball with the characters. No good memorable lines, dull personalities, not a damn thing. With, of course, the exception of Fassbender. I mean, there were a couple crew members who hardly even had speaking parts?!?

So, if there were multiple ships, where were the other BBA’s on those other ships? Even if there was only the one other ship, the one whatsherface and David leave on, where were the BBA’s on that ship? Why didn’t they take off 2000 years ago? Were they still in cryo? Was everyone only on the ship where the action took place? Does the other ship have jars of black goop, too?

And for all their advanced abilities, the BBA’s hadn’t yet perfected leak-proof container technology? Even we puny humans have Rubbermaid.

Saw it last night in 3D. Gorgeous movie. Fassbender was excellent. But I was frustrated at the stupidity of the crew (taking off your helmet? Really? No quarantine? The guy controlling the mapping droids got lost?). I liked the whole theme of the conflict between parents and offspring. But I left the theater feeling like I must have missed some important exposition somewhere because I didn’t understand how the characters “figured out” what the aliens were up to. I didn’t get what was going on at all.

I don’t mind having unanswered questions, but I don’t like leaving a movie going “WTF?” I hope there is a director’s cut or sequel that explains some things – and I’ll wait and find out before I see it unspoiled next time.

With great fear I poke my toe in. Having seen the movie last night I’ll damn well admit it raises more questions than it answers.

Still, some people are thinking about it…
