Pronunciation of Aston Martin (sports cars)

I’ve always thought of it as pronounced like Austin, Texas. My husband pronounces it ASS-ton Martin. We’re both pronouncing Martin like the traditional American name. What say you?

ASS-ton is correct. They’re made only about three miles from where I live.

‘Asston’.

Maybe you’re thinking of Austin Healey?

Count me in the group who sides with your husband.

Austin as in Austin Healey, International Man of Mystery.

No, it’s Asston. Asston Mahhtin, if you wanna be all 007 about it.

Your husband’s pronounciation is correct. Aston Martin is in no way connected to Austin Motor Company (eventual maker of the oringal famed Mini under the ownership of what became British Leyland. )

Alive At Both Ends, can you get me a proximity discount on the DB9? I love the car, but the US$170+ starting price is a little steep.

Stranger

I believe that traditionally someone must at this point inform you that the proper pronunciation is in fact “Throatwarbler Mangrove”, for reasons somewhat obscure.

[Sean Connery]“I know I got a ton of ass when I was driving mine.”[/SC]

I say hubby is right, and you are subconsciously conflating it with Austin, which also happens to be a British car.

I’d say it more like Ahs-ton, with Ahs being subtlely different from Ass, but generally speaking he is right.

Fixed that for you.

You might want to add a few more +++'s to that (or a K)! Even with a proximity discount $170 would be a pretty good deal.

What **MrSquishy **said. If you can get a DB9 for $170 you don’t need a discount.

Sadly I am so old that I remember watching James Bond drive his ‘ass-ton’ martin when the films first came out.
I’ve also watched Austin Healey play rugby.

Me too.

I remember the first time i saw his name, i thought it must be some sort of joke. Then i just decided that his parents must be cruel.

If they had been cruel they would have named him Denis.

I suppose it’s just possible that they didn’t think of the Austin-Healey connection. It’s not like it was a major brand.

What’s wrong with the name Austin Healey?

never mind, just googled it and got my answer. I really should’ve done that first.

Yeah, but do you know what they call his son with the big eyes?

Where you come from they would have called him Frogeye.
Here in the states he would have been known as Bugeye.
