Pronunciation of Misirlou

Recently I have been listening to Dick Dale and his Deltones greatest hits CD which contains the song Misirlou (repopularized by its inclusion in Pulp Fiction). When I see the title my brain says “Miser-loo”. But this pronunciation does not seem right to me. Googling tells me the song was a Greek pop song in the 40’s and Misirlou is a girls name. Can any greek speakers (or anybody with a clue) tell me how to pronounce this name? This is really bugging me. Thanks for any help.

Well, I’ve heard Dick Dale pronounce it many times. To him, it is…you guessed it…“miser-loo.”

Well, if it is good enough for him it is good enough for me. Thanks silenus.

It’s not “miser” loo. This is a very old and traditional piece of Greek music which has an accompanying line dance. It’s pronounced “meezer-loo”.

I’ve always pronounced it “mizzer-loo”, but I’m probably wrong.

Are you trying to get me to believe you don’t have the official “Dick Dale Talking Electronic Dictionary”? No way. Everybody has one of those! I especially get a kick out of the way he pronounces “Diabolical”!

She told me she loved me like a brother. She was from Arkansas, hence the Joy!

I’ve always pronounced it misery-lu but it is entirely likely I’m saying it wrong.
