Why do people pronounce the word ‘centripetal’ as ‘centripikal’ and other gross distortions? One doesn’t pronounce ‘petal’ as ‘pikal.’ What is going on here?
They’re probably confusing “centripetal” with “centrifugal,” and settling for a sound between the two.
It should be cen-trip-e-tal, the e is long.
