Proof that Humanity does not suck.

A woman who worked at the paper last July, (she was fired) found out last fall that she has breast cancer. She is a single mom of a 4 year old. She had to go on welfare. She has finished her chemo, and had the breast removed recently. She starts radiation soon.

We have stayed in contact, and when the woman sitting next to me at the paper found out, she told her husband - who is the head of the circulation dept.

He has started a fundraiser for her. Keep in mind she was fired a year ago. He has arranged a bbq, a bake sale, 2 50/50 draws, and his dept tossed in $250, which the editor matched. With the authorization of the advertising dept, I offered a cab company free ads in exchange for 60 cab rides for her so she can get to and from her radiation treatments.

We secured a donation from a drug store for a case of ‘Boost’, and several pkgs of multi vitamins. Everyone is pumped up about helping her out - I am humbled to be a part of it.

We hope by the end to have between $1000- and $1500 cash plus the cab rides, worth about another $500. we will have another in the fall if she is still sick too.

Maybe there is hope for us yet.

I saw an item a couple of weeks ago in the Atlanta paper. It seems some little girls (ages 6-7) read about other kids their age who had lost their hair due to chemo treatments. They allowed their long blond and brunette hair to be cut short so that they could donate it to a company that makes wigs for the stricken children!! A company rep came by in person to collect the hair and the girls told him that their hair was only to be used for kids and not “big people”.

Now how’s THAT for making your day!

I’m actually getting my hair cut at the end of summer to donate for chemo patients. The organization is called “Locks of Love”. Your hair must be donated in either a braid or ponytail & must be at least 10 inches long. Your hair can not have been dyed, bleached or processed in any way.
It’s a great program. I learned about it when my grandmother was going thru chemo. Last I heard, they are currently having trouble paying for the wigs to be made (each costs over $500 to make), so they are having to sell some of the hair donated.
