propane turkey cooker troubleshooting

I have a propane cooker, the kind usually sold to cook Turkeys with. (I use it for homebrewing beer).

When I went to light it this morning, I’m not getting that nice circle of blue flame…instead I’m getting a “firey” type of flame that is very sooty.

I even replaced the propane canister…same problem.

I tried running a wire brush over the burner area…still no luck.
Anything else I should be looking for?
TIA

Yeah, there’s adjustment on the burner for air intake. It is usually just a flat piece of metal (circular) w/ a couple of slots cut in it. Turning this to “open” allows more air to mix w/ the propane. Closing it cuts the air down. Adjusting this one way or the other should take care of the problem.

I’ll go look at mine and see if there’s anything else.

later~

Thanks…I tried doing that, but no luck with that approach either. Grrr maybe I need to clean the burner in a different way?

If this unit has been stored for any length of time, perhaps a spider has set up house inside.
Disassemble, clean, try again.

Let us know about the results.

Best way to clean the burner is to blow it out w/ high pressure air. There should be an orifice that can be removed and cleaned. It is usually a small brass piece that screws into the burner between the hose and the burner. This will sometimes get a foreign object in the small hole. Take this out, clean it w/ a wire, toothpick etc. then blow out the burner w/ air if available, if not improvise.

If this doesn’t work your regulator might be faulty, if you have one. You changed tanks though, so that shouldn’t be it.

On the units I’ve seen, the regulator is on the hose, not on the tank.

Sounds like a shortage of air to mix with the propane.

damned post eating hamsters…sorry, had to work today…back ASAP, remodeling a propane supply office. Nice irony huh!

Gary, I think you’re right about the hose being attached to most cookers. The ones you get at the store anyway. I forget retailers sometimes do things a little different.

Anyway, B-dave said he’d adjusted the air to no avail.
Let’s see, clean the burner, blow out the line, check the orifice, regulator’s okay, adjust air, got sufficient fuel supply? other than that I don’t know what else to check.

Take it back to Wal-Mart, buy a new one keep the receipt and give them the old one. (he-he… just kidding… not)
