Propriety of booing politicians in parades

Manners are important, that means don’t use foul language to express your opinion; do not boo or cheer so loud as to deafen those near you. It certainly is appropriate to cheer, so why would the only alternative be silence? This is a parade, not a solemn ceremony.

Well, I’m sorry to hear that’s been your experience. I hearby invite you to join my family at our city’s parade next July 4th. Lots of manners observed and being taught. I saw a lot of instances of parents supervising their children in being fair over who got to pick up the candy being thrown. Families were being careful not to block each other’s views. And my favorite part was when our state representative was handing out candy personally (not throwing it) and when he gave a big handful to the child near us, asked her if she would be a good girl and share it with her siblings.

On the other hand, if Ward Connerly had shown up, I can’t say Ann Arborites would have had their best manners on display. Lucky for him he saved his trip for tomorrow.

I don’t see good nor bad manners coming into it. They’re at a public event and doing a public appearance…

Boo (0r cheer) your heart out…

Well, he didn’t look at all well this year, so I’m hopeful this won’t be an issue for too many more years. (I really dislike this particular hypocritical bastard.)

I kept quiet, mainly because my wife was sitting next to me, and I know how much she dislikes it when I boo. I used to pick out any of the many possible topics to yell at Hyde about. No vulgarities, of course.

I feel it is important to be able to express your opinions in such a public forum. I see no reason why the elected officials should feel automatically entitled to universal adulation as they ride in a parade.

DePage is a HEAVILY Republican county, at least on a local level. Occasionally it leans less severely to the right depending on a particular gubernatorial or presidential candidate. But for many if not most statewide, local, or Congressional offices, there aren’t even Dem candidates on the ballot.

Moreover, at the risk of bitching too much about my selected residence, a huge proportion of my village strikes me as extremely superficial, and judgmental. Bunch of moralistic yuppies who vote their pocketbooks.

So, didn’t boo Hyde. Didn’t boo Birkett. Just sat on my hands.

Don’t think we’ll stay here too long after my kids get out of school.
