Prosethic eye

How do you wear a prosethic eye? Can the eye move with the good eye? Do they have to be removed to be cleaned or disinfected?

I thought there would be a lot of answers to this questions. I am really interested in this topic. I’ll keep an eye out for some good responses.

Was that an intentional pun?

The eye will not move. And yes it has to be removed and cleaned.

You’ll probably find this site, artificialeye.net, interesting. They have details on eye construction, fitting, and cleaning…and as a side note, apparently some newer models can actually move with the remaining eye.

The truth is: you don’t wear a prosethic eye at all. You wear a prosthetic eye. That said: the best way to describe a glass eye is that it looks like some kind of a bowl that you insert into the empty eye socket. If you want it to move you have to attach muscles to it. An operation which is rather impossible.

You don’t wear it all the time. When you sleep you take it out and put it in a glass of water overnight, much like contact lens users do.

Generally you should change the eye each year because the glass gets scratched and etched by the tear fluid.

In the future we’ll probably be able to replace eyes entirely if need be. There is a huge amount of work on this, and eyes are relatively easy to replace in a couple of respects. (harder in others, but…)

  1. They are external, which means that cybernetic eyes can be relatively easily recharged, unlike hearts.

  2. The operational mechanism is fairly simple. The real trick is connecting the muscles and brain, and I recall that there has been a lot of progress in those areas.

You don’t know me very well, do you, Bob55… Floater: your name seems especially appropriate for this discussion; are you an eyecare provider?

No, but I’m one-eyed (and I have floaters in it).

And I might add that like radar ralf I have en eye out for one-eyed jokes.
