Protecting My Knees While Running

So I want to start running, but my knees are weak when I walk up my stairs, let alone going around the block. It’s no big deal, the weak knees going up the stairs is mostly in my mind. But how do I better stableize that area if I’m running, are there orthotics for that? Pads?

One of the best things you can do for your knees is to wear a good pair of running shoes. I do not know how what distance you plan to run but it would be a good idea to do some strength training. You can’t really strengthen the knee but you can strengthen the muscles around the knee. This makes your knee more stable.
The surface you run on can be a factor as well. Body weight is also something to consider. Running form is also important. I would strongly encourage you to visit your doctor before you begin training. In addition, a personal trainer could give you some good info. If you have knee problems, you might consider other ways to get a cardio work-out. Swimming, or aqua-aerobics offers a superb way of training for people that have knee problems.
