I’ve recently started a new position at work that involves occasionally being in an environment with dust and dirt flying around and also some interaction with the public.
What I’m looking for is glasses that look like an ordinary pair but also provide some protection. I used to wear glasses before getting laser eye-surgery done about ten years ago.
I’m going to go into my local opticians but I want to be sure what exactly I’m asking for first!
You should have no problem. I don’t have a specific source but we got new safety glasses once a year at work and the ones I got looked just like ordinary glasses. They came with clip on side shields for times you needed them. I have seen the safety frame selection at the optometrist also.
I would have thought that your employer should provide the safety equipment you need. Over here you would not be allowed to enter an area like that without protective eyewear and any other PPE that was deemed necessary.
They do, but the standard equipment isn’t flattering to say the least and while I’m not vain I would prefer something a little more every-day looking. And don’t worry I’ll OK it with the powers that be first.
If employers provide safety glass for people who wear prescription glasses, they’ll be those oversized ones that go over top. If you want prescription safety glasses, you’re usually on your own (outside of whatever benefits you might have that cover prescription glasses generally).
Where I worked, in an auto parts plant, the safety office provided made-to-prescription safety glasses. They also had safety glasses that looked like wraparound sunglasses, only clear. You can probably get them at one of the big home improvement stores
This would be the correct answer as differing industries have differing requirements. At my current job I cannot have glass for instance. My last job had non-detachable side shields as one requirement. Also no tint. I can get tinted now if I want. But no metal frames. The cheap plastic glasses sold at home improvement stores do not meet the safety specs for impact resistance at my current worksite nor are they scratch and chemical resistant in sufficient ratings.
