This first game back in NY is being played with all the Mets players and coaches game salaries (about $450,000) donated to the widows and children of NY’s finest lost in the rescue efforts.
Way to go Mets!
And… It ain’t over - 'til it’s over.
(5.5 back of the Braves at the time of this post)
Normally as a die-hard Braves fan, I really can get worked up for the late season Mets-Braves clashes.
I never thought I’d say this Meek, but the last week has shown just how much of a class act you New Yorkers are. I’m happy to see baseball again in Shea and Yankee Stadium.
Normally, I’d put in something here ragging on the Mets, but for now, my Braves cap is off to you guys and all you’ve gone through. Still hope we beat the crap out of y’all, but happy to see Shea will be up and running! Wouldn’t be much of a season without the Mets.
Mets fan here. I was really filled with pride when they wore the NYPD, FDNY and EMT caps in Pittsburgh. And now this. Of course, many of them (and other professional athletes too, of course) donate beaucoup bux and time to charities, especially for kids. But this shows genuine goodness of heart for the people of their host city.
I also heard today that Barry Bonds will donate $10,000 to the NYC relief for every home run he hits between now and the end of the season. I never really liked him before, and I’m not so certain I want him to break McGwire’s record, but 10Gs a gopher-ball!
There are a lot of stand-up guys in baseball, that’s fer day-umm sure.
Oh, and bluepony and iampunha, I hope the Mets kick Atlanta’s tush this weekend.
I’ve been a Mets fan since 1964, and I think the opening ceremonies tonight were one of the most stirring moments in the history of the franchise. All the little touches – the WTC blacked out on the scoreboard – were perfect. And the donation was a class act.
lurker will be happy. (Well, I am too, truth be told. I’m just an adopted Mets fan! )
He taped the opening ceremonies last night because we had some things we had to do. I’m going to see if I can get him to bring it over today so I can watch it with him.
All of this makes me say once again that I’m proud to be a NYer.
You know, I hated the Subway Series. But geez, if the Mets can come back… if New York ever deserved another Subway Series, it’s this year. And they should wear those NYPD and FDNY caps the rest of the year.
Been a Mets fan since they were born. My dad used to take us to the Polo Grounds to watch them, before Shea was built back in '64 or '65.
Come a long way since then, of course, although you wouldn’t have known it from the way they were playing in the first half of this year. Glad to see we’re doing our usual job of keeping Atlanta and Chicago in their place here in the last half of the season.
I mean, Atlanta’s a nice town and all, especially MARTA, which is, I have to admit, superior to the NYCTA. But Atlanta was the one we originally beat in '69 for the National League championship, and as for Chicago, they pulled their usual fading act in August of that year. I, for one, am a traditional kind of guy, and I think '69 established a tradition worth keeping.
Another life-long Mets fan here, wish I could be there to see some of it (besides the sad substitute of internet “game watches”.) Yes, the players (and Valentine’s) efforts since the tragedy have been touching to say the least.
But too bad about the setback last night. 4 1/2 back with 12 games left – it’s going to be tough.
If Team x wins a game and Team y doesn’t play that game yet, then Team x is 1/2 game ahead of Team y:
…W…L…GB
Team x…1…0…–
Team y…0…0…1/2
A full game behind refers to the addition of one team winning and the other team losing a game (or one team winning 2 and the other not playing any):
…W…L…GB
Team x…2…0…–
Team y…1…1…1
Team z…0…0…1
I hope I explained this clearly enough, it is harder to explain than I thought.
And since baseball teams have days off, rain-outs, etc. at different times throughout the long 162-game season, it is just as common as not that they have half-game instead of full-game intervals.
Having said all that, the Mets are now 4 full games behind, with 8 games remaining.
