So, then no evidence Mr. San Jose.
Who are “they?”
G’Dope? or Fathom?
The ones that committed the internet bullying, and dragged their shit over here.
He could tell you, but then he’d have to erase your memory.
Neither. I am not even sure what G’Dope is? ![]()
I can remember it for you wholesale, however. ![]()
Bullying =/= phishing.
Those threads are not inherently phishing expeditions. If any poster is not comfortable revealing personal info, don’t.
G’raffe Dope
I agree… to an extent.
I am a certified expert on such, and the threads pose little danger for your financial security. No actual criminal would take the time to collect info in this manner.
BUT, still there are crazy people on these boards, and if you are concerned about being stalked, be careful what you reveal. And of course a stalker could use that info to steal your identity- just to fuck with you.
This is why I think the SDMB should take the proactive step in shutting down threads like that.
Note, there have been some reported instances of “fun questionnaires” on FB and the like being used as Phishing attempts… or to install malware. Be care what you reveal anywhere on the internet.
Then, yes.
The FB questionnaires are a completely different situation. People have some expectation of privacy on FB since you can set levels of privacy for your own account. In addition, you choose who you are or are not “friends” with on FB.
You sign a registration agreement indicating that everything you post is potentially searchable and therefore public. There is zero expectation of privacy. If people choose to reveal any personal information, that is up to them and they have been forewarned when they sign up. Anything that looks problematic should get reported and the mods will look at it, but too many threads are meant for the sharing of personal information and part of the conversation. It’s an impossible thing to police, except in the most egregious of situations.
Doxxing or any type of purposely seeking out and revealing personal info about another poster is not allowed. Revealing your own personal info is your choice.
I know for a fact that the Giraffe Boards frown on using personal information as much as this board does. Hell, even the Snack Pit has rules against it–ever since one poster was so harassed. Doxxing is considered a shitty, shitty thing to do.
And I say this as someone who is a semi-frequent topic in their “Behind Your Back” forums. If anyone were going to be harassed, it would be me. They have not. Unless they have harassed you, DrDeth (who are also a frequent topic in BYB), I think this is just an attack on their forum for doing something you don’t like. I sympathize, as no one likes being made fun of. But that doesn’t mean they do even worse things.
(I’ve not been there in a while, but I assume it hasn’t changed much…)
How about a compromise in which you warn (again) posters to be careful (maybe make it a sticky?) and double check any of these reported to you?
I don’t think the danger level is high, but…
I dont want to start a board war. PM on the way.
Wait, who posted about stalkers on the Giraffe Boards?
In any case, I think you may be confusing the words stalking and mocking. It can happen.

There was an issue of cyber-bullying that was going on. There was a group of people that kept posting in Broomstick’s threads, which is basically cyber-stalking. This was discussed in the mod loop, at least one warning was issued that I know of, and as far as I am aware, that problem has been dealt with. As I said earlier, we don’t tolerate cyber-bullying.*
Newer security systems don’t allow you to use the same word. But you can still simply the process, and actually have tighter security, if you try it this way:
[ul]
[li] What’s your favorite movie? January[/li][li] What’s your mother’s maiden name?** February**[/li][li] What was the name of you high school? March[/li][li] In what city were you born (city only)?** April**[/li][li] What is your paternal grandfather’s nickname?** May**[/li][/ul]
Now you are not sharing any personal information at all.
Weird factoid: I didn’t know my father’s middle name until last month, when I needed it to request a replacement Social Security card.
