In a forum designed to stamp out ignorance, some of your points are just plain funny:

I think “blows away” is a pretty subjective term, so we’ll just agree to disagree on that one. And what does the hard drive have to do with the graphics?
Lol give me a freaking break. Here’s a quote from Gamespot’s review of the Xbox version of SSX:
I don’t dispute point 3.
You mean ethernet, and Sony and Microsoft will have network adapters soon enough. You’re right about the game makers making it work though, I’m hoping and praying that some game company will figure out how to make a game work over this “Internet” thing pretty soon. I’m surprised that you didn’t mention the $40 bucks PS2 owners will have to pay for the adapter, cause then I could bring up the $50 per year introductory charge for Xbox live service, which will be required to play any Xbox games online.
Brilliant argument
Lol yeah it has nothing to do with the fact that the Xbox is just not interesting in Japan. All Japanese people hate all Americans. That must be it.
Sega did a pretty decent job for a while there with Phantasy Star Online… I was seriously hooked on that game. Involved enough to keep me playing, but simple enough that I didn’t feel bad when I just up and quit (can’t play video games all day, unfortunately).
And smooth? At 56K modem there was almost ZERO lag.
When that puppy comes out for GameCube and XBox it is gonna be a joyous day for me. I loved that game!
Can we ignore how many units are currently sold each week? As of March 2002 the X-Box only sells about 30,000 units in any given week. On the other hand the PS 2 sells 60,000 units in the same week. So even after being out for a whole year the PS 2 is still outselling the X-Box and Game Cube.
I agree. I’d rather there wasn’t just one console out there because I want the companies to stay on their toes.
First off Yondan, you are 100% correct, I AM an asshole.
And, I was kind of making a joke, if I offended you, well, I made an offensive joke.
But I do stand by my statement: just because people in Japan do not like a product is not MY barometer of whether it is any good or not (wow, what a poorly constructed sentance). I’m sure the Japanese could care less what product Americans buy. Maybe they do. That is their problem then.
I mean, these people love those goofy Godzilla movies for crying out loud!
Now Slacker says this:
Then agrees with a lot of what I say, buts let move on to the differences!
**
I don’t have time tonight to get into the differences in graphics because it involves terms like pixel shaders, vertex shaders, high resolution anti-aliasing, polygon throughput, bump-mapping, texture compression, blah blah blah, just trust me, X-Box games have more of it than any other system.
Microsoft can contiune to program the hard drive on the X-Box and create new graphic effects, and pass this technology on to its developers.
Oh and did I mention- NO MEMORY CARD ON THE X-BOX? That’s another sweet thing about the hard drive!
We can play “cite the reviews” all night. I bet both of us together could come up with over 100 reviews off the Internet in about, 60 minutes?
I’ve played both games. Don’t get me wrong, the PS2 version is excellent- but the XBox version is better.
Thank you I like the breakaway controller as well. In reality there is a lot more technology built into the XBox, like the hard drive, a higher processor, Internet ready hardware, so it is bigger and sturdier. iT HAS TO BE- IT HOLDS MORE STUFF! Compare to Game Cube.
Not all Japanese people hate Americans, just Japanese people who live in Japan!
And, apparently they hate the X-Box- but who cares?
MGibson:
We should not ignore that, but one thing that Microsoft does better than almost any other company is brand building.
Okay, that is how Vince McMahon said he was going to build the XFL, but this is Bill Gates we are talking about. With new games, Internet capability, and the usual cutthroat tactics Microsoft uses, X-Box will catch up.
Hey, knock yourself out. I worked at 3dfx Interactive for 2 years so I know all about that stuff. Brings back old memories just thinking about all the fancy graphical terms. However, they don’t amount to much to anyone except stat-monkey fanboys. Have you seen Final Fantasy X? Fatal Frame? Madden? Sly Racoon? Rachet and Crank? These games all look phenominal on the “technically inferior” PS2. Somehow, I still enjoy them (or am looking forward to 'em concerning the last 2).
This still isn’t making much sense to me. I assume you’re figuring that the PS2 is going to develop more graphical power when its hard drive comes out next year as well.
Hey, you finally got one! I agree, that’s a nice feature. Looks like your streak won’t last long though.
Please. Planet Xbox bashes the PS2 in every single review. It’s a site for fanboys, by fanboys. Read their review for Wreckless for Pete’s sake, they make it sound like it was handed down by God himself. I have yet to find someone who liked that game.
The simple fact to remember in all this is the fact that it’s all about the games. I don’t now, and will never give a rat’s ass about how the Xbox looks next to the PS2 on a stat sheet. I want to play games. I bought a PS2 'cause it has the games I’m interested in.
Funny, Slacker, but when I said the same thing to myself (it’s all in thie games) and I did some research, all the games except two that I wanted to play were going to be on the XBox… and the XBox had at least three games I wanted that the PS2 didn’t.
Like the PSX, Sony is pushing quantity over quality. That’s why they’ll never drive Nintendo out of the biz… the Big N doesn’t care if it can’t release 50 million games, it wants good ones. Sure, some stinkers come through anyway, but when I look at a Nintendo rack each year they have the must-haves (IMO).
XBox doesn’t have the Final Fantasy series, which royally sucks for me because I love the FF series. But the rest of them seem to by multi-console ports all over. Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2, for instance, in both cases the XBox is (or has) getting a better version.
So, yeah, hey, I ain’t knocking Sony. They made a great machine, and it has the momentum from the PSX on its side. But I think the XBox is a better system. Nintendo’s momentum ran out when the PSX came around. Can Sony’s hold out over Microsoft? Only time will tell. But the PSX succeeded (IMO) because of its longevity. I can see the XBox has longevity as it is the most technically powerful system. Will this be all that is needed to knock Sony down (not out, of course)? I don’t know. But in two years we’ll be hearing the rumblings of the next-next gen systems from Sony and Nintendo… and Microsoft? Or will the XBox stay strong for another year or so?
It is certainly built for it. Sony’s PSX was built for it, it went through two Nintendo systems. But now that Nintendo is on the optical format its next gen system might (probably) will be backwards compatible, too. So Sony’s leading practice of aiming at the teen to adult crowd has worn off. N and MS got on that bandwagon quick.
Sony’s all momentum… and it is a good momentum. But I think the future isn’t exactly bright and sunny, whether they manufacture their own chips or not.
Good post erislover. Note to Vinnie Virginslayer: this is what intelligent discussion looks like.
Oh, and eris, keep yerself busy with the Xbox and pick up the PS2 and FFX dirt cheap in a couple of years. It’ll still be a great game. I never had a Nintendo 64, but I’m thinking about grabbing one now for 30 bucks so I can play the Zelda and Mario games I missed.
Keep in mind the XBox has the hard drive already built in. Why didnt Sony put theirs in, and is there a guarantee that they will commit to a hard drive (and I’ll buy that XBox is not online yet, I’ll see that when I believe it too!)
As for the reviews, can you guarantee me your source does not have an agenda? My point is, I’m retelling what I have observed with my own 2 eyes. I’m sure you can pull 50 reviews showing the PS2 version of the game is better, and I bet I can find 50 showing ther XBox version isbetter.
Well, maybe not- since the XBox is being outsold right now 4:1! :o
Erislove add Grand Theft Auto 3 to the list of games X-Boxers will get screwed out of, as just recently announced! Okay, score one for Ps2! Trust me though, XBox will get something that is equivalent down the pike . .
Before I retire for the evening into my chamber, I should repeat because this thread is turning into the Old Testament: I AM NOT KNOCKING PLAYSTATION 2. I’m not posting on here to rip PS2, it’s a wonderful system, and there are a lot of great games, and I think Sony will be just fine.
It’s just the tone of some of the posts are like “X-Box=DEAD” and it simply aint true, folks!
Well, now that the price has dropped so much I can pretty much afford to buy both of them, so that’s what I’ll probably do. GBA with Tactics Ogre and Tetris, XBox with SH2, Halo, and Morrowind, then PS2 with FFX and FFXI.
Then have an epiphany and realize that this behavior only reinforces my subtle suspicion that I will be single forever.
Yeah, everyone hypes GTA3 but I don’t really know much about the game. It hasn’t piqued my interest yet. If it has car racing in it then I’m not impressed.
I forgot to mention Onimusha for either system, and the GC’s requisite purchases (Zelda, Metroid, Mario, etc). But I already own a GC.
GTA3 is a lot more than racing, but it’s not necessarily for everyone. It is one of my favorites though, I enjoy speeding around the city while up to no good. It’s also remarkably open-ended. There’s usually several quests you can choose between at a given time, or you can go on your own and stir things up.
I personally love picking up a police car and chasing down other criminals. You can also lift a taxi and ferry people about the island to pick up some cash.
You probably know all this already. If you haven’t played it, it’s definitely at least worth a rental when you get your PS2. Heck, it’ll probably be in the greatest hits collection by then, and only cost $20 anyway.
This one started short, somehow it was an essay by the time I finished.
Personally, I agree with erislover the xbox and the cube are the systems for me. I think it all comes down to the exclusive games, let’s face it Madden, Tricky, and THPS3 are virtually identical on all three consoles. I like xbox’s exclusive lineup: DOA3, PGR, JSRF, Halo, and Gun Valkyrie are my kind of games. And lets not forget all the xbox exclusives in pipeline: Project Ego, Toejam & Earl III: All Funked Up (oh hell yes), Knights of the Old Republic, Panzer Dragoon Orta, The Matrix, Doom III (can you imagine this on anything less than a GF3? If you saw Max Payne for ps2 you know what I’m talking about), and of course Halo 2.
Ps2 has its own exclusives that kick ass, FFX, GT3, GTA3, Devil May Cry, and Rez, to name a few but call me a spec freak, fanboy or whatever the euphemism is, but the ps2 graphics turned me off, and when I bought my xbox at launch ps2 was still $300. I may get ps2 when it drops to $100 but in the meantime I think I’m going to get one of those $150 gamecubes now that all the good games are coming out.
The xbox hardware, although not nearly as efficient as that of its competitors allows for more expansive and complex level design and more seamless digital worlds as well. Jet Set Radio Future for example would be a hell of a stretch to port to ps2, if it was possible at all. And Halo managed to tie a huge environment together with the occasional one second load thanks to the hd. True, ps2 is getting a harddrive addon, but its gonna cost you, just like the multitap and mem cards two other peripherals you don’t need with an xbox. And I just sold my yeti-sized controllers on ebay and bought the new Japanese variant, so no more hand cramps from gun valkyrie, and don’t underestimate the extra long, breakaway cables – saved my ass many a time. Another overlooked xbox feature is the ability to upload your own music, this was a huge selling point for me, and has live up to my expectations, I do wish more games supported it though.
Also, m$ has said that they are banking their future on three main products/services, windows, .net, and xbox so I don’t see them pulling a sega on this one, even if they are bleeding money at the moment. They have a good product, at an extremely competitive price, better third party support than the gcn, quality exclusive games now and in development, and 40 billion dollars in their Scrooge McDuck style coffers; they realize videogames are increasingly outpacing movies in sales, and it only makes sense to be in this race for the long haul. Now, if they could just stop pissing off EA and start kissing some serious Square and Namco ass. Of course there is always the standard m backup plan: when in doubt buy the company out.
In the end I say hooray for the console wars, gaming has never been better… except for Sam and Max Hit the Road, the next gen consoles still got nothing on that gem.
I should mention that, at our local Best Buy, the PS2 was still being advertised as being $300 weeks after the Xbox was being advertised at $200. Someone over there’s been slow on the uptake…
Anyway…
Funny… I was playing Halo online just last week. For free.
I like Sony… I think they are worthy of a lot of fans (not me, but I like them as a video game company.
I am NOT a fan of Microsoft. I DO have something to say in their defense though. X-Box may not do as well as some people thought it would… but it’s JUST a start off point. The next Consol war can bring Micro up. This is their first attempt and Sony had a head start.
Sony and Microsoft especially have an advantage, and that’s because they make a lot of their money with other products than video games. They can make mistakes once in a while.
BUT
Nintendo DOES have Game Boy. Game Boy is something that can be CRUCIAL for Game Cube success! The connection with Cube and Boy is a VERY big factor. Right now, more than (I would say) the last five or so years, Nintendo has a LOT of good things going for them. Great games, a better system than the N64 was in it’s day, Game Boy connections and old enemies showing up on their systems (both past Sonic and Crash TV ads once mocked Nintendo, and now they have games on their systems). Nintendo is making good.
Sony is no doubt doing a great job like it has since they had first gotten into this game.
Microdick… I mean MicroSOFTdick is doing what it can, we haven’t seen there full rath yet.
About what someone said about Nintendo in 5 years will be selling their system for $50 while the other 2 are at $100 due to DVD… Nintendo could add on some games, and make the GameCube have a wacky color casing, and sell it for $100. Even if it does sell for $50, that’s fine with me!! The money is in the razor cartriges, not the razor blade holder.
This would make a GREAT made for TV movie!!! Like “The Late Shift” for the tonight show wars, and “Pirates Of Silicon Valley” for the computer and computer interface wars. The game council wars.
If you want a pc game system with out having a pc get the x box
Thats how ms should of and should be selling it… Instead of spending so much time with " were not a computer "
They should have ads saying " if you ever wanted to play pc games and not buy a pc … "
Also they should just dump japan and go after the american and europe markets
I’m glad to see a american company bck making games and a system too bad it wasnt atari or coleco tho …
although in online gaming sony will dominate since there will be a console version of everquest ( withconsole style rp )
Also Thell have the rights to starwars galaxies everquest 2 and anything else verant comes up with
Nintendo is offering support but is saying for example "if they want to make battle net well give them the tech to do so but were not getting directly involved "
Prsonally as one that perfers pc style gaming over most console games im waiting til the box drops down to 150
Btw if you look at gamespys e3 pc coverage most of them have a chance of being ported over to the x box
Something thats occured to me is nintendo seems to be getting by on nostaliga a bit a lt of the cube fans seem to say I had a snes 20 or a nes 20 years ago ect
