Where (or what) the hell is the Third Place?
Target Ref: Playstation 2 Advertising slogan in UK (possibly, nay probably, elsewhere?)
Huh, at first I thought this was mundane question easily answered by a google seach since I’ve never seen the ads.
Well, it was easily answered by a google search (playstation “the third place”), but it was actually interesting!!!
Seems Sony went to David Lynch (yay!) to direct a series of commercials.
Oh, BTW
As for “what the hell is Third Place”: It’s David Lynch. It’s best not to ask too many questions.
Really?
I just assumed:
Playstation = “The First Place”.
PS1 = “The Second Place”.
PS2 = “The Third Place”.
I’m not an expert on this, but is there a difference between “Playstation” and “PS1”? I always thought they were the same.
When I saw this thread I thought it was referring to the claim that PS2 was in third place in the three-way console war. I am not sure it is the best title for a PS2 ad campaign.
Playstation was Sony’s original console release, the “PS1” came out a few years later and was effectively the same, only much more smaller, and ‘sleeker’ looking. Basically a compact version of the original Playstation.
RE: PS1 - ok I understand now, same games, different compact console.
I found what seems to be a plausible theory to the whole “The Third Place” thing.

After releasing the PS2, Sony released a new version of the PlayStation which, along with being smaller and sleeker, included an attached LCD screen. That could be what they mean by ‘second place’
Or maybe the ad means that all the Playstation models released thus far were safe to play without protection. So far, you’ve only gone to 3rd base with their machines. But their next release will take you to home plate and will require the use of condoms, foam or other appropriate measures.

I’ve always thought it was a stupid slogan too – to me the only meaning it brings to mind is that the console is in third place behind two others (presumably Xbox and Gamecube).
I’d love to know just what those advertising types were thinking in that particular brainstorming session…
The advertisements are all available for d/l on that link above. I just watched them. They’re definitely worth a look, cool stuff. It’s David Lynch afterall.
