Robert Ballard has located the wreckage of Jack Kennedy’s PT109 in the Solomon Islands.
I wonder why Ballard hasn’t looked for the wreckage of Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra? It seems to me that that would be more historically interesting than PT-109.
Because it’s not in the ocean-- look at www.tighar.org
I hope I did this link right…
Whoops! Now they’re backpedalling.
Payne N. Diaz: It’s too close to lunchtime to search the tighar site, but it seems to me that if the Electra were on the land that there would be larger artifacts – the engines, for example. My personal opinion is that they crashed into the ocean.
I met Bob when he came to speak to a class I took in college (taught by Eugenie Clark, no less). He is an incredibly interesting person, and as down-to-earth as you’d ever hope to meet.
that’s all
Wasn’t there news last year that Amelia Earhart’s plane was found in a Sattelite pic? It was on the reef of some atoll somewhere…
Or did I confuse that with something else?
Johnny, the idea is that AE landed the plane on the reef on Gardner Island, where it was swept out to sea by tides, etc., leaving her stranded on the island. A woman’s partial skeleton was found by the Brits in 1940, but it was sent to Fiji where it disappeared during the war. There are also reports of a radial aircraft engine being found on an unknown island in the area (the guy couldn’t remember which island) and being hauled to the air base on Canton Is. The engine ended up being buried in the base dump to get rid of it before an inspection, and later the whole dump was covered up when the Americans left.
There is considerable evidence to suggest the idea that Amelia & Fred ended up marooned on Gardner Is., but no “smoking gun.”
bernse: The deal with the satellite pic was that an anomaly of some sort was spotted on a photo of the reef surrounding Gardner Is. but when researchers looked at the actual thing in the water last summer, it turned out to be a blob of red algae growing on the reef. Man, were they pissed–they were hoping for an engine or something.
Hmmmm . . . JFK’s PT boat and Chandra Levy’s remains found within days of each other. Coincidence?
I hear the scary music Eve.
i can almost see the drawn-out episode on “Discovery” channel already. An hour-long show for a 5 minute story, complete with reels of stock footage and CG simulations played over and over and over…
(yeah, i’ll watch it!:D)
