Say you are invited somewhere and the host requests pub attire, what would you wear?
Winter - jeans and t-shirt, casual jacket or polar fleece, shoes
Summer - shorts and t-shirt, scuffs.
Whatever I wore at work when quitting time rolled around.
Except if I had a tie I’d be prepared to tuck it into a pocket, especially if it would get in the way playing pool.
Better idea, ask the host, explaining you hadn’t heard that one before.
A checkered newsboy cap like Andy Capp.
Casual attire, perhaps with a jacket. Tie not required.
Some ridiculous British thing, probably a Sherlock Holmes-style hat.
We don’t have “pubs” here, so I’ve never heard anyone use the term “pub attire”.
I’m British and I’ve never heard that phrase. I guess it means wear whatever you might wear at a bar.
I’ve never heard the term “pub attire” in my life, and I’ve spent considerable time in pubs/bars on both sides of the pond.
I guess I’d consider that to mean pretty much anything; “casual attire.” Which would depend on the class of pub, and one’s goals when attending said establishment.
I would have to ask the person who invited me - never heard the phrase before.
Whatever I’m wearing, which is what I wear when I go out to a bar. I’m not really sure what you *can’t *wear to a pub.
Peanut shell-covered shoes, because the only pub I ever went to had bowls of salted-in-the-shell peanuts on the tables.
Serious answer would be whatever I would wear to go have a drink with friends, which would be blue jeans and a casual shirt.
I would assume that it was their way of ironically saying “wear whatever you like”, because there’s no such phrase.
Googling “pub attire” gets no useful results, with this thread being the third hit.
I would think it’s someone’s misguided attempt at a fancy phrase for “casual.”
Yep, I googled it with the same results.
OP, I googled “casual dress” and the wiki explanation pretty much nails it as comfortable, and not ceremonial:
Turtle neck, and tweed coat with leather patches on the elbows, flat cap.
I don’t know why.
That means we get to define it. I vote for “whatever you’re already wearing”.
Something that adequately covers my testicles and nipples.
Perhaps they meant “pube attire” - naked but tastefully covered with dreadlocks or a weave sourced from below.
Here in South Florida, when I go to the local British pub, I wear golf shorts, a t-shirt, and sandals.
I also wear that to my local lounge. The pub and the lounge are my two regular bars.
Unless it’s happy hour on Friday, in which case I usually wear jeans and a button down, short sleeve shirt… Because I’m going straight from the office.
