Pub/tavern names: The This and That

Two here in Austin are The Crown and Anchor and The Dog and Duck.

21 posts and no mention of The Elephant & Castle? The name dates back to a pub at the London intersection in 1750, but it’s been used multiple times since, including for a restaurant chain in the U.S.

Here in Seattle, I used to spend considerable time at The Owl and Thistle and The George and Dragon. Spent one evening in a down-under place called The Kangaroo and Kiwi. I’m only a block or so away from The Pig and Whistle, but I’ve never been.

Nowadays, the only place I go regularly is The Old Pequliar, which doesn’t fit the thread.

There is the Bull & Finch in Boston that was the inspiration for Cheers.

Cincinnati has 3 bars named The Cock & Bull.

Beavis and Butt-head approve.

The Cask and Flagon outside Fenway Park in Boston.

The Pig and Pickerel in Albany, NY
Holmes and Watson in Troy, NY

It was called the Ship and Billet when I lived in Greenwich (Admittedly that was over thirty years ago).

On the other hand the Anchor and Hope on the Thames at Charlton was where sailing barges would *anchor * and hope to get a cargo.

In the NJ town I grew up in we have The Shepherd & The Knucklehead. The owner is also the author of the book by the same name.
