Publix vs. Winn-Dixie? or, Grocery Shopping in Orlando, FL

Publix, although I recommend Albertsons’ attached liquor store (off-licence) for beer.

How are you bringing Norwegians here in a truck, anyway? Won’t they drown?

I also like Publix but Norwegians may be happier at the Whole Foods mentioned upstream for some of the stuff you’re talking about.

As much as I adore my adopted Illinois, it has no supermarket that can compete with the amazingness of Publix. Not even the Meijer’s (although it comes close).

Near Orange City (east of Orlando, on I-4 on the way to Daytona Beach) there is what I believe is the world’s biggest Publix, or at least a prototype. There’s a whole seating area near the deli where you can eat what you ordered, sort of like a restaurant. They have those big olive bars too.

Publix is nicer. The Publix store brand is good, sometimes better, than the other brand. I like their skim milk. And the prices are not that different.

Back when I was an undergrad, I had the choice of Winn Dixie and Publix. I learned what Publix would offer cheaper, or what I really wanted from it, and shopped some in WD and some at Publix. Hey, I also lacked a car!

But if money is not a reaaaaal constraint (and again, the difference is such that it only matters to the really tight budgets), go with Publix. Publix… and again, Publix.

Publix whips Winn-Dixie’s buttocks. Other stores getting their buttocks whipped include Kash & Karry and Albertson’s.
