DAng if i could edit the subject i would - sorry
I edited the title for you to make it more descriptive.
From personal experience with having a deciduous (baby) tooth extracted at age 9, I can say that, yes, it hurts. And it bleeds a lot too. Dentists are not always reluctant to pull permanent teeth. Extraction of wisdom teeth (third molars) is pretty commonly done, thought I still have all 4 of mine.
A friend of mine wanted a rotten tooth pulled (not a wisdom tooth), and he could find no American-trained dentist who really wanted to do it. I’m not sure why the reluctance. He finally found an Asian-trained dentist who was more than happy to do it for him, no questions asked. I don’t remember what country she was from, Taiwan maybe.
The teeth on the lower right side of my mouth never grew in properly, in fact too many molars erupted on the left lower side - three or four were extracted there and yet I still have a full set of molars on the left), and none at all ever erupted on the right lower side; I’m 35 and I still have one of my Milk molars on the lower right jaw because nothing pushed it out from underneath.
The molars on my upper right have very little to close against and one of them is angled outward at about 25[sup]o[/sup] toward my inner cheek - the filling that was in there from long ago recently fell out and I asked the dentist to extract the tooth as it seemed to be of no use to me whatever (I can’t chew with it because it closes on nothing).
He wouldn’t do it for two reasons; firstly that extracting a tooth is pretty much irreversible and is a more serious procedure; from his POV there would probably be les complication if he just re-filled it. Secondly, he said that if he removed it, there was a possibility of ‘food packing’ into the space between the two adjacent teeth, which could be uncomfortable and could cause problems with them.
Never had a tooth pulled myself, but I have vivid memories of the time my sister had all her wisdom teeth out. She was, literally, spitting blood for three days. And, from the look on her face, I guess it hurt, right enough. Not a procedure to be undergone on a whim, and it would be as well to investigate alternative procedures. IMHO.
I recall seeing a relative in Iran have his tooth pulled using an old fashioned method. You tie a string around the tooth and attach the end of the string to a door and then slam the door. It worked in this case, but my memory is foggy about how they did it.
I’d imagine the string would snap, but it didn’t in this case.
Anahita, I recall having seen that method used too. But, like, that was on TV in cartoons. You sure about this?
The string/door method is quite effective on teeth that are already loose (milk teeth in the process of being lost naturally (at age ~5+) - wobbly teeth can hang in there for quite some time, often attached by a few tiny strands of tissue - this can interfere with the child’s eating habits and it may be best to yank the tooth out.
Easier said than done though; how the hell anyone would persuade my 6yo daughter to let them tie her tooth to a door is completely beyond me.
well, nearly all my milk teeth had to be yanked - damn little suckers just wouldn’t come out on their own. I don’t remember hurting that much - anaesthetic took care of all, iirc
Why do you need a door? I don’t get it.
At any rate. It may work in cartoons but, as someone who has had teeth pulled, I can tell you there’s no way that would work in real life. The dentist almost had to put his knee on my chest to get some leverage. It was slow work and the tooth refused to budge. Those things are well held in place.
Adult teeth have a much more substantial root than milk teeth, which don’t so much ‘pull out’ as ‘break away’ from the gum.
I have had many teeth pulled by the dentist (at least four baby teeth and my four adult bicuspids), and I can tell you that the only thing that hurt me was the initial shot of novocaine.
4 wisdom teeth and 4 others (bicuspids, I think) at age 13.
I was put completely under (sodium pentothal, maybe) for the procedure and was pretty sore the next few days. If I remember correctly, my jaw hurt more than the spots where the teeth were.
Cheeks puffed out & bruised, soft food only (not a problem!) & had to keep the wounds clean with a syringe & salt water.
Reputable dentists don’t pull teeth without Novocaine or nitrous or something, so to address the OP: No, it doesn’t hurt to have the tooth pulled, because of the novocaine and/or the laughing gas, and afterwards it’s just an ache for a day or two. I had teeth pulled for orthodontia, and also wisdom teeth out.
Having a tooth pulled is IMO no big deal. You’re probably visualizing all those Three Stooges movies where the dentist reaches in there with a pair of pliers and there’s a lot of screaming and struggling. But it’s not like that.
Also, Trader, if the reason you’re wondering about having a tooth pulled is because of a toothache, they no longer automatically pull an “ouchy” tooth. That’s from earlier eras, when that was all they could do. But nowadays there are other options. A sore tooth doesn’t always have to be pulled.
Ducky - perceptive.
I will however elaborate on this ( and thank you everyone for replying)
OK the deal goes.
Young happy trader was eating dinner one night and then CRACK … OMFG someone drove a pick axe through my 3rd molar ( ? third one from the back in the lowerjaw) … I was like … ow.
So i thought to myself … hmm well if i have cracked/chiped it … it will prolly die of (the nerve) - so i went out an dbought up a heap of drugs. Had everything your bored house wife would have. This worked a treat except for when i woke up and wasn’t off my head. And then i started getting bad bad head aches. I mean headaches that you know are wrong - catscan wrong. Eventually i said F it and wen tot see a dentist.
“Dentist” i said - put the needle here and put the pliars here … and then pull it out.
The dentists thought i was being funny. They had a quick look and could see no problems… they x-rayed me … and could see no problems. They drilled the tooth behind the one that was hurting and said … yep that was the problem. I was wacked up on somthgin so it no longer hurt and i was happy… after months of misery i was in no pain …
Until i woke up the next day and it was aching worse then ever.
I invested in more drugs and bought a mouth gaurd incase i as grinding my teeth. I found this helped alot. and eventually my tooth ache went away and the head aches died.
I was soo happy… i mean dancing happy.
I booked a plane ticket and went to see a sweet heart of mine in America … life was looking good. Flying over the pacific somewhere i get a dreadful feeling … my tooth has strated acheing… more then acheing … screaming / burning… but its not just that one now… its the two eithre side… I do my best not to burst into tears.
I have the worst vacation of my life. I am so used ot taking codene the local pain killers (tylanol) don’t work … i am taking 4 or 5 ina sitting and usualy 20 a day and they do not effect me … same with burefen.
I am then introduced to Oraljel - to which i developed and extreme allerigic reaction too with blinding headaches.
I fly back to Austrlia depressed exhausted and in need of some releif.
Codene !.. yay
I go see a doc and say " hey pull this tooth will ya" … he laughs at me. Like i know it sounds odd to beg for somethign like this … but i was.
He surmised i may have a jaw infection under these teeth - that is why they could not see it on Xray.
I begrudingly take a weeks worth of antibodics and some lovely Panadene Forte (the top shelf stuff) and go home and think about killing myself.
For three days… nothing.
On the forth day i wake up without pain in soooo soooo long. I jump and dance … and i am nice to the people i work with … This was 3 weeks ago.
2 days ago my tooth started hurting again.
