Pulp Fiction question

Now that you say it, that makes perfect sense.

“Cocktail party” is the standard answer. I’m convinced it’s a 24/7 brothel.

“Abandoned warehouse” is also the standard answer. It was in fact the garage to a funeral home. Next time you watch the movie, look out for the hearse and the coffins in the background. There was also that big parking lot out back, and the ramp inside led up to the embalming room.

The Wolf was an independent contractor, and his fees were obviously substantial. So it makes sense he’d have a much sharper automobile than Jules, who (let’s face it) was kind of low on Marsellus’s totem pole.

Because even if you are working for a criminal, you don’t exactly want to advertise you are a heroin addict and most certainly not let him know exactly how much you buy per month.

Possible. But how much leeway do you think Marsellus would have given him in “managing” the nightclub? More likely, he was there just to make sure orders from the top were carried out.

This would obviate the need for any more elaborate backstory.

Good point. Tony snuffed Christopher for his drug use, didn’t he?

Is it really plausible that Marsellus was ignorant of Vincent’s drug use, though? Especially after all the time he’d spent in Amsterdam?

Yes, but Marsellus seemed like he took good care of his people. He was obviously willing to pay The Wolf’s substantial fee to get Jules out of the Bonnie Situation.

When most people think of Amsterdam, they think hookers and pot - not heroin. Also, Marsellus isn’t some international criminal kingpin so there’s no reason to think he has that many eyes in Holland.

Because the morning’s murders might have been traced back to him if he didn’t. I doubt he did it out of the kindness of his heart.

Drug use is drug use. Vincent could fuck things up while high on pot just as easily as he could shooting heroin.

But yeah, I wouldn’t tolerate it in any of my employees either.

Lol, come on. You know that isn’t true. Everyone thinks sticking a needle in your arm is worse than smoking pot.

After having lived with a regular pot smoker, I’m not sure I’d agree with this. :frowning:

I guess when you live with a heroin addict you’ll know for sure.

True, but from the rapport between Marsellus and Jules I got the impression that he was a decent boss as long as you didn’t cross him.

So they went to ransack the place, got there and decided to send someone for breakfast? Makes little sense.

I got that impression too, but I also imagine there were limits to his altruism.

Not to drag this out, but I was acquainted with an intravenous drug user in grad school. He looked like death warmed over, but he could at least tell you reliably what day of the week it was! :frowning:

Ha, no. Not all drug use is equal, both in objective medical term, and in social terms. Pot is significantly less impairing, physically damaging, and addictive than heroin. And you’d be hard pressed to find someone living in LA - particularly in the circles these characters travel in - that would view pot use as a problem. Marsellus getting upset at someone smoking a joint is about as likely as him getting upset at someone drinking a beer.

I’m guessing you also wouldn’t tolerate nearly as much murder from your employees as Marsellus does. You and he are in very different industries.

(I hope.)

The issue for mobsters isn’t fucking things up, but that the very long jail terms for heroin and other hard drugs makes any subordinates busted for them liable to pressure from law enforcement to give up higher ups in return for a plea deal or going into witness protection. In the Sopranos,

this was an issue when Big Pussy, who had been dealing heroin, deciding to wear a wire and betray Tony, for which he got whacked.

Some mobsters may not want to mess with heroin because it’s too much of a liability.

Let me get this straight: If Vincent and Marsellus went to Butch’s apartment not to stake it out (or hope to catch Butch there when they arrived) but to search for clues and such, then why on God’s Green Earth did Marsellus go get coffee and donuts in the middle of the search???

If Marsellus in the vicinity was just a coincidence and Vincent was the only one at the apartment doing a search only, then why is it that apparently the first things he did when he got there was: put down the big gun, hit the can? The apartment didn’t look like the usual “toss” had even started.

(Note that Butch’s apartment has nice nice glassed back door with a kitchen window nearby. Not the usual patio/balcony door setup. And he showed some dexterity in climbing so even if there were no stairs he could have shimmied up. Why didn’t he try to sneak in that way? Easier to take a peek before opening the door. He might have even seen the gun and decided to pass on the butt-watch.)
