After exhaustive discussion, it was agreed that the troll-calling rule could be modified in the Pit only, due to its unique nature among SDMB forums. Calling someone a troll is no longer prohibited in the Pit but the rule relaxation applies only to the Pit.

Please keep in mind that this doesn’t replace the reporting function. Just dubbing someone or something as trollish won’t automatically attract mod action.

The relevent section has been removed from the Rules sticky. Clarification can always be added later if needed.

Good call. The mental gymnastics of attempting to force someone to reveal themselves to be a troll (definitively) so we can report them to you when we all knew that’s what they damn well were was a pain in the ass. We won’t abuse it.

To clarify, Veb is saying that merely saying “hey, that guy is a troll!” in a thread won’t summon us like evil spirits. If you believe someone is breaking the no trolling rule, please report the post.

As for trollish vs. troll vs. exhibiting behavior strongly reminiscent of trolling, it’s (thankfully) a moot point in the Pit. Call anyone or anything a troll to your heart’s content.
