This board has more rules…
Than a toad has warts?
“Rules are good. Rules help control the fun.”
Ah, this is good.
In a recent thread, someone said “somewhere, a bridge is unattended.” I thought that was hilarious, but they got their heinie slapped for it. I’m glad that such droll trollisms can now be used with impunity.
p.s. The person that posts after me is a troll.
Uh oh, this is bad.
The ultimate act of trolldom is to accuse another of being a troll. Such accusations are particularly disruptive when they respond to a heartfelt tract.
I strongly disagree with the change.
The Pit ought to be a place of lively discussion interspersed with entertaining flames. “You’re a troll” is too easy. And actual trolling will be lost in the general slew of accusations.

Shodan
I think the average SDMB poster seriously overestimates the cost of having fewer rules around here.
What the hell can happen of real consequence? It’s a message board!
I feel stupid enough having to go to a special forum to say something nasty, much less worrying about where, when, and for what reason I may use the word ‘troll’ or the ‘putz’ smiley - would society really break down if all this self-important regulation went away?
I may die of shock from that revelation.
Thank God. I always thought that was a dumb rule in the Pit. You can call someone a kitten-strangling father-raper, but not a troll. I’d have expressed my approval sooner, but I was busy, doing the dish.
That is precisely why we ask that members still report the posts of those they suspect to be real trolls.
Enough posters could find growing hostility on the board sufficiently irritating that they left, leading to a reduction in enjoyment provided by this board.
This is not a claim that every rule we have is an excellent rule or that there are not rules with which we could dispense (or a claim that there are not rules we might consider adding). However, for those who really prefer a situation in which no rules are tolerated, we already have News Groups. Once one agrees that some rules are a good thing, then, like the guy who first offered a $1,000,000 to sleep with a woman and followed it up with an offer of $2, we have settled the issue whether rules are OK and we’re now just haggling over price.
I’ve changed the title of this thread to be more eye-catching, after a bunch of reported posts about posters calling each other trolls.
I’m beginning to wonder if a poster in GD might be doing a subtle form of trolling, simply by willful misuse of the “quote” function. It keeps derailing the conversation (and those who are reading the thread know the thread I mean).
Can things with innocent explanations like “he’s an idiot” still be trolling?
hello, im new
Hello, Welcome to the SDMB!
You might wanna try going to General Questions, or MPSIMS.
You have posted in a sticky note on Board rules.
I hope this helps.
Troll!
I thought it looked different…
That was unfunny.
A Newbie made a simple mistake.
No it wasn’t.
Now we can come up with subtle, troll-related insults so other posters will praise our cleverness.
God, I hate being the new guy on the block all the time!
- What is a troll?
- What is trolling, and is it the same thing as troll-calling?
- Am I now a troll for asking this question?
