While talking with some coworkers at work, I mentioned that the thing I found weird about my pets was when they lost their baby teeth and I’d find them all over the floor.
Not one of my coworkers, in fact, no one in the office believed me. None had witnessed this with their animals. Now I admidt I was little when my cat and dog (they have long since died) lost their teeth, but I swear this happend.
Yeah… you know its odd… I have had many puppies and my vet said that their teeth fall out and you may see them when your are playing tug-o-war with a rope or towel.
I have seen that their teeth are gone… but have never seen the fallen ones. I think that they automaticly swallow them when they finally fall out. Just kind of an “oh theres suddenly something in my mouth automatic swallow reflex” action. Has to be.
I’ve got three from most recent puppy - two molars & one canine. But they do tend to eat them - even if they fall out, they tend to do the “hey there’s something on the floor, let’s see if it tastes better than her expensive shoes did last week” trick. Even with large dogs (& therefore larger puppy teeth), we’ve never found more than 3.
I know one dog that ate dog claw clippings at the vets (took two dogs, didn’t notice that Tess was eating Bess’s big labrador claw clippings until she’d finished most of them - Ugh!)
Our puppy has lost two baby teeth in the past week. We didn’t really know puppies did this until we got her, but once we heard about it, it just sorta makes sense.
We have five teeth from our 7-month-old springer. All of our previous dogs were outside dogs at that age, so we never saw any puppy teeth they lost. But yes, they usually do just swallow them.
I never found any of my two cats’ baby teeth, but when my dog Gizmo was teething, I would often find teeth, though he swallowed a good portion of them, too. For a couple of days he even had double-fangs - the adult large canine teeth on top had come in, but the baby teeth hadn’t come out yet.
<sigh> My boys are getting old now - the cats are ten and Gizmo is almost 7.
Val did the double layered teeth thing, I think he wanted to to be a shark - I was glad when the adult ones grew in solo, they’re a lot blunter than the puppy ones.
I’ve had the privilege of being around a horse being reshod. The trimmings from the horse’s hooves were fought over by the 3 dogs hanging around. Just thought I’d share that.
I’ve only found a couple of puppy teeth around my place for the 3 dogs I’ve had. Usually the only sign I have that one has fallen out is the blood spot on the sock they are chewing on.
I found two of my cat’s baby teeth. She conveniently left them on top of the coffee table. Where I think they still are. I should probably clean up sometime.
It’s good to know I’m not alone. I don’t know why we found them. Maybe as they are so small they get vacuumed up and no one knows what they are. Perhaps we found the first one and were looking for the others.
Then again both the cat and dog would drink coffee if the cup was left out where they could get it.
Markxxx I don’t want this to come as sounding critical. Of all the dogs I’ve raised I only saw one tooth. If you are truely seeing them all over the place, then its possible that you arn’t giving them enough chew toys to play with. As the other posters said, the teeth usually come out in tug-of-war games, or wrestling with other dogs, and get stuck in various things. If they are just falling out while the dog is just walking around then perhaps they arn’t getting the vigourous jaw exercise that most dogs get. Most likely you just find them more often than most people, but if you got an extra towel, throw it to 'em and let em play, just to be sure.
We have a little one that turned 8 weeks old today. Now that the baby teeth are in, when do they lose them? At about what age? Our other cat is nearly 10 years old and I’ve forgotten!
