Pushing Daisies 11/19: "Oh Oh Oh...It's Magic!"

Could somebody just give me a quick rundown on this episode? We went out to eat and thought we were taping it, but of course, we weren’t.

You should be able to watch it online at abc.com.

Yes, but not right now!

I think the AD version was the Gothic Castle modeled on the real life Magic Castle which was mistaken by the cab driver for the Gothic Asshole.

Pausing the video, it looks like PD’s version is the Conjurer’s Castle.

Yeah, I was half asleep when I first came up with the AD references theory. Oh well.

Ned’s brothers invite him to their magic show, for which the headliner is a magician who acted as surrogate father when their/Ned’s dad left them. Meanwhile Dwight Dixon visits the Aunts to find out where Charles’ watch is. One of the aunt meets him surrupticiously, and reveals that Chuck was buried with it. Later he digs up her grave and finds the coffin empty. Meanwhile, at the magic show the magician asks for help finding out why his magical pet assistants are dying off. They determine that he was the intended victim but not before he is killed during a magic trick involving being in a box filled with concrete. Suspects include his annoyed assistant and another performer, the geek who eats odd objects. They open up his concrete to ask him about his death but there is no body only a note. But they realize that the block does not contain the other half of the scarf and must have been switched with the real concrete block that does hold his body. They find it beneath the floor and he reveals that he usually escapes using a magnet in his shoe but it didn’t work. Chuck remembers her necklace being attracted by the geeks stomach, who must have swallowed the magnet. THey think it must be the geek, but he is found dead with something up his nose. But this was a trick, and he holds Olive hostage. But the twins trick him into standing on the trap door and he falls through. Later tNed sets up a way for Chuck to talk to her Mom. Olive wears a microphone and earphone, and tells the aunt she is pretending to be Chuck so she can unburden herself. Chuck hears her aunt from the car outside, and feeds Olive questions to ask through the ear piece.

That was beautiful.

Thank you, Jack! Nice work you did there…now if you could just go back and do that for the whole series, we could probably start piecing things together!

But seriously, much appreciated.

lol you’re welcome. I would still watch the episode if possible. I left out some details obviously and there were a bunch of great quotable dialogue.

Actually, it hadn’t gone up yet when you asked, but the Pushing Daisies wiki has a lengthier summary up now.

I know this is last week’s episode, but I just got a chance to watch it…

Can someone explain the switch-a-roo with the concrete blocks? How did the Geek manage to switch the one with the body with the one without when he apparently needed a forklift to move one of those things? Or is it the “it’s a fairy tale” explanation and I shouldn’t think about it too much?

He had a second empty one ready ahead of time. They showed how he dumped the one with the magician into the pit he had ready. The switcheroo was as simple as that.

Does anybody know where I can watch an online episode that is not abc.com? I am in Canada and I can’t watch anything on that site.

I get that he had the empty block prepared beforehand. What I don’t get is how he managed to hoist the heavy block back up into the wooden box before his assistant realized he didn’t get out and had to call for the blow torches.

Hmmm, good point. It sounds like a continuity issue more than a hand wave. I did not think about it.

You can buy them at the iTunes store for $1.99US each, if you’re willing to shell out. There might be somewhere else you can get them free. I don’t know.

He didn’t switch them right away. If you recall, when they first examined the block, it had his scarf sticking out of the top - it really was his dead body in there. Later when they went to open the block they realized it didn’t have the scarf and must be a fake. It was in between these two examinations that the switch was made.
