Pussy Galore

One at a time? Someone needs to watch more porn.

‘Pussy’ has always been one of those words you could get past the censors because of its double meaning. That was Carlin’s point in his comedy skit.

There is allegedly an interview Johnny Carson did with Zha Zha Gabor, in which she came out with one of her cats and sat with it on her lap. At some point she allegedly says to Carson, “Do you want to pet my pussy?” Carson responds, “I’d love to, but you’ll have to move that damned cat.”

Whether or not it happened, Jane Fonda asked him all about it on national TV, including quoting the lines above, with no problem from the censors. It’s a weird gap in censorship during a time when you could get bleeped for saying ‘ass’.

Of course, “ass” has a similar double meaning, being either a part of anatomy usually hidden under clothes or an animal. And any more detailed comparison would seem to suggest that, of the two, “pussy” is more worthy of censorship, not less.

Yes, that’s why I called it a ‘weird gap’ in censorship.

Yes, in the time when, as Carlin noted, you could use “snatch, box and pussy” in the same sentence in a Disney film, if you had a character tell someone to “get off their ass”, there had better damn well be a donkey nearby.

It’s sad, how we’ve regressed again. I watch Law and Order on WeTV, and they’ll silence certain words from the episodes. Note that these words were fine 15-20 years ago on over-the-air Big 3 network broadcasts! Why are the We folk such prudes?

In other Goldfinger news, Tania Mallet who played Tilly Masterson (the sister who wasn’t painted gold) died on March 30th.

What was her career like? Well, she also appeared in an episode of The New Avengers. That’s it.

That one Bond film appearance warrants her getting an obit in British papers.

And “Tilly Masterson” is a reference to … ? (Their last name is “Masterton” in the book. Maybe “Masterton” was too dirty for the movie? ;))
