PVP - right to be offended?

I worship PvP.

It wasn’t a strip about violence against women, it was a strip that was discriminatory against geeks. Personally, I think a Constitutional amendment should be passed in support of geeks’ rights. This kind of offensive behavior shouldn’t be tolerated!

(Seriously, it’s obvious that it was supposed to be a sheltered geek-boy’s freaked-out reaction to a good-looking teenage girl. It was also clear that, although it was funny, the kid was whacked in his reaction. YMMV.)

Esprix

Or, more to the point, it was funny BECAUSE the kid was whacked in his reaction. The joke here (since the strip on the main page has changed) isn’t that Hellkitten got hit (And, hell, she’s Hellkitten, she can take care of herself!), it’s that Rayden bugged out at the site of her, due to his complete lack of social skills and exposure to the opposite sex. Punching her was…extreme. But that’s the point. His reaction was completely over the top, and that’s what makes it funny. (And, judging from today’s strip, there’s a good plot reason to do something to get Rayden out of the way…)

And also note that he was evicted from the game because of it, so it’s not like “Joke! Ha ha! Never mind” It’s “Joke! Ha ha! And it was wrong, too! It’s FUNNY!”

Esprix

And, of course, how hard could a lump like Rayden really hit? I doubt Hellkitten even noticed.

I remember the day when comic strips were funny. Remember those days? When they made you laugh or smile because they told jokes and had fun characters?

I miss those days.

This one isn’t even drawn well. It’s just deliberately geeky weird. I hate geeky weird and I hate deliberate. Geeky weird is not funny, geeky weird is 110% in-jokes that make no sense out of context. Deliberate is lame, try-hard, trendy bullshit.

sigh

Like Arden Ranger and Esprix I am a daily reader of pVp. I think that the OP is a bit of an over reaction. I don’t find it offensive, nor do I understand why you find it offensive. If you find a reference (not the actual act itself, but just a reference) to violence offensive, then I am suprised you even function in society. There are plenty of other things in this world to be offended by. A strip like pVp is not one of them.

[sub]… and Arden, I promise, I am not stalking you on the boards. :)[/sub]

hmm…

well, i went to that comic, read it…

read some of the archives…

bookmarked it…

etc.

looks like you got me reading ANOTHER online comic strip; thanks!

Put me in the camp of “didn’t get it.” It also seems pretty mild; it’s just a reference to why the guy needs a new person on his team, hardly anything graphic or excessive, and this Rayden character was kicked out of the contest. If anything, it shows a perfectly reasonable reaction violence by a game player.

Extremely good point, and taken in that context, much easier to accept. Thank you, rjung.

Yes.

Nice to meet you, too.

You’re welcome!

You’re welcome, too!

Like I said, normally I like PvP. Just not that particular one. For those who commented, and were able to explain politely, thank you. It’s nice to get another person’s point of view on something when you’re not certain if yours may be too biased.

Ha! Like I believe that!

You already admitted to it.

That is one of the comics I read daily. I thought it was pretty funny. Personally, it was one of the funnier ones I have read in a while. A lot of teenage guys talk that way and has a lot of appeal. Luckily, it wasn’t in a newspaper since they probably wouldn’t run anything that is not in the “norm.”

HUGS!
Sqrl

Not really. I remember a lot of bland crap, actually.

Ok, well, Far Side and Bloom County and Calvin were funny. All very geeky and all very weird. As Gary Larson’s father once said, it seemed like somebody’s always about to get killed in a Far Side cartoon.

PVP has its moments, although it tends to reuse the same jokes now and then. (Oh gee, females can be gamers too? :gasp:)

Anyway, if you want to see a incredibly skull-crushingly unfunny cartoon about gamers try Little Gamers. I dare you to find anything resembling funny.

Whoah. You’re right, Alphagene. Little Gamers is very, very bad. It’s at least an order of magnitude less funny than Family Circus.

is this offensive?

Offended?

If you want to be.

Personally, I think its more against the geek than the girl. Fear responce from someoen who cannot handle the pressure! AHHHH! Perhaps poorly worded by the writer Personally I wouldn’t have chosen violence against the other party. But I didn’t write it.

On the other hand, random lashing out is a decent way to represent a fight or flight reflex jam.

Not the kind of geeky I meant. I was thinking more of a standard User Friendly, SLuggy Freelance kind of geeky stuff, which for some reason (despite having at least one foot on that side of the fence myself) I have never found to be particularly funny.

To each their own. My comic isn’t exactly the epitome of radically funny either.

Imagine my surprise and delight to find that Sexy Losers and Thin H Line are one and the same!

I was achingly sad when the Thin H Line stopped being.

I owe you, rjung!

I think what “offended” me (thats a little to strong of a word…I don’t really care about it, but yes, when asked, I find it disturbing) is the “pulled down his pants”. Whats up with that?
