Pyramids Live: Secret Chambers Revealed

I missed FOX’s showing of Pyramids Live: Secret Chambers Revealed.

Was it as badly laden with von-Daniken-esque pseudoscientific claptrap as Fox’s earlier Live from the Pyramids show?

Just as bad, honestly.

Wanna know the secret of what was behind the door? I will tell you.

ANOTHER DOOR. And that same guy was sweating and beaming, and heralding it as an AMAZING DISCOVERY!

Where’s Geraldo when we need him?

I like how they saved what was possibly the biggest discovery for the last 5 or so minutes. That in and of itself should tell you how much value they placed on science and how much on this pseudo-entertainment.

I mean what if it was a major discovery like the mummy and writing all over the wall? They left themselves no time at all to discuss it.

Did they have that self-proclaimed “alternative Egyptologist” from the earlier Live from the Pyramids show, who insisted the Pyramids must be 10,000 years old (not merely 5000 years old, as most Egyptologists think) because the layout of the Giza pyramids matches the alignment of the stars in Orion’s belt 10,000 years ago?

Nah, they had a semi-real Egyptologist. Some guy who gets National Geographic grants.

i knew that it was going to be a waste of time…i’m surprised that they showed anything new. it’s usually the same old boring scenario with a wanna be archeologist/media star who just rehashes what the last wannabe went over.

All of what you say above may be true to some extent, but there was more going on behind the scenes.

There’s been a huge controversy in the archeological world (at least in Egyptology) ever since the door was discovered years ago. The man who discovered it was not allowed to follow up on his find – for some reasons that are legitimate. He wasn’t even invited to the opening.

The Egyptian government, rather naturally wanting control over what might be the biggest find in decades, decided it wanted to go slow. Dr. Zahi Hawass is “Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Director of the Giza Pyramids Excavation”, and more or less a natural person to direct the opening. He’s not known for fringe pyramid theories.

Quite a few nations and archeological teams wanted “in” on the opening, and the politics and bad feelings were running rather high. The media sensation was not hype – because what might have been (and might still be) behind the next door would be one of the finds of the century. It might be like a camera being present when Tut’s tomb was opened.

In case anyone cares, Rudolf Gatenbrink (the guy who found the door in the first place (and who, as partly_warmer mentions, wasn’t allowed to follow up on it)) has a site at http://www.cheops.org/ where he talks about his project.

And there was no von-Daniken-esque crap at all. Actually the Egyptologist used the finds in the workers city as well as the tomb of the (mayor?) as proof that it was built by Egyptians and none of the nonsense of aliens and other pyramyths.

On the plus side there were interesting vinettes about the excavation of teh workers city adn some interesting shots from within some of the older closed pyramids. The damage within is rather heartbreaking.

I think the “live” aspect was a sily crapshoot. They should have done the dig and reported the findings only if it was of any huge substance (for a TV crowd).

The second block was rather anticlimactic for a television audience even if it was a significant find for the archeologist team.

Did they find that bat Capone used in “Untouchables”?

Oh wait a minute.
