I read on one site, that sells tips to getting an FFL license, that the government is very contankerous about giving out licenses, and that on some whim, or technicality, such as a wrong jot or tittle, you will be denied a license. Also, once denied, you are pretty well hosed. Is this true, or is the site just trying to sell a Xerox copy of the downloadable FFL dealer’s application (or some such scam)?
Thanks,
hh
I got mine back in the 80’s. The few mistakes I made on the forms a BATF agent called me and held my hand through to correct them and I got my license (and still have it) quite quickly.
Several folks told me that the Clinton years were a nightmare. I’ve had a few people tell me that the nightmare ended during Bush. I have no idea if that’s true or if anything has changed under B.O…
If you’re setting it up out of your home, you have to be careful. It still needs to be run as a business. You have to give open/close hours on your application. You also have to abide by all local/state laws. So if you need a sellers permit or tax id number from your local municipality or state you have to be able to supply that to BATF. You cannot get an FFL to only sell at gun shows. You have to have a business location address, even if it’s your home.
My overall opinion is the application is pretty self explanatory, you can find out everything you need on line, and you don’t need one of those kits some people/companies are trying to sell you.
Is this a private conversation, or could someone tell us what an FFL is?
My first guess was future father in-law.
Federal firearms license.
For running a gun-related business.
I got one in 2001. At least at that time, the horror stories were not at all true. The BATFE agent was very helpful and offered suggestions along the way.
Ahh… that explains why the home-based FFL I deal with “closes” at 5. I just thought his wife didn’t want any interuptions of home life in the evenings.
My experience is with the Class 3 FFL, or Curios and Relics license.
I went to the ATF Web site in October and ordered the application form (you cannot download it). Did not receive it.
Repeat the process in late November. Did not receive it.
Called ATF in March and ordered it, and reported my experiences thus far; no note of surprise on their end. Received the application form in late May.
Lord knows how long it will take to actually process the application; I sent it in the beginning of June.
FWIW, the blank form fulfillment seems to be outsourced.
