I went to a sporting goods store yesterday that I knew to have a fair selection of old handguns. (For example I once saw a beautiful early-model Beretta 92 with walnut grips. They also had a P-38 I considered.) When I went to the shooting department all they had was airguns. I asked the guy there when they stopped selling firearms. He said about a year ago. (It had been a bit over a year since my last visit there.) He said there had been a mistake in the paperwork. They had to pay renewal on their FFL. I think he said it was $90. But someone thought they had 90 days and the FFL expired. They believed that, having been selling firearms in their sporting goods store for 85 years, they would pay a fine and get their license back. Apparently not. They have been unsuccessful in regaining their license.
Does anyone know a legal reason (i.e., BATF rule) why the store is having such a hard time regaining their license?
