Q: DC's WWII Memorial

Just visited the WWII Memorial in DC. Each US state (and territory) is represented by a pillar, but there seems to be no order to the state’s names. It is not in the order by which they entered the Union. And, although the memorial appears to be divided by “Atlantic” and “Pacific”, the US States are not grouped in any way, shape, or form in relation to these oceans…nor in any other apparent fahsion.

Does anyone know what the reasoning might be?

From what I remember of the dedication, in the Tom Hanks narrated bit, the first thirteen states are grouped together around the freedom wall and then the pillars are arranged in how they joined the union, and then the territories. They had to divide the states into 2 so they could make the oval. A better picture of it is here. So there is some order to the states.

Took a quick look - check the issuance of the state quarters. It looks like the states alernate from the “Freedom Wall” on their admittance to the union. Territories, alas, come last.
