Q on remote/offsite linking

Before I get to the question I should say that I’ve only been using a computer for a little over a year, & I’m this close to being a total doofus with it, so please try not to use any acronyms or long technical terms that I most likely will not understand.
My question is this: I want to make an image in a post to a message board. I know how to follow the directions to do things like making quotes or italics or links, & I have no problems doing those things. I have a website on which I have uploaded the picture that I want to have appear on my post, but when I follow the directions to do this, all that appears is a red X in a box. Is this because the website I have is a free one & the company doesn’t allow offsite linking unless you have a paid site?
I’ve been through their terms of service & searched their FAQ & their knowledge base & have been unable to come up with anything about this subject. This does not necessarily mean there is nothing there; it could be that it is couched in such technical language that I just do not understand what they are talking about.
Any insights into this will be greatly appreciated.

I have a technique you can use but it probably will be frowned upon here.

Offsite linking is often prevented by web hosts as it is regarded as “bandwidth theft” (i.e. the host’s bandwidth is being used while any advertisements or content is left unseen by the viewer).

Try www.inkfrog.com they allow ‘hotlinking’.

Some message boards don’t allow the Image tag. Does it?

to all who replied. I have successfully made my link.
