Quasi-Random thread viewing with Firefox!

Just something I figured out on accident.

  1. Install Firefox (you already should have!)
  2. Install the NextImage extension from http://nextimage.mozdev.org . Restart if necessary.
  3. Open a thread in Firefox, any old thread will do.
  4. Right-click and click “Open Next Image” or “Open Previous Image”. This will take you to a quasi-random thread!

How This Works:

NextImage simply looks for the last set of numbers in the current URL and increments or decrements it by one. This is usually used in conjunction with online picture galleries. However, it’ll also change the Thread ID number on the SDMB. And since it seems to use straight sequential numbers for thread tagging (no matter which particular forum is being posted to), that’s why I call it quasi-random.

Where do I get Firefox?
Should I?
I have an iBook and just use the default Safari browser, are there any gains other than the op’s random threads

Why not try Firefox?

YES

Available as a free download or on CD for nominal charge.

The Firefox System Requirement page indicates that Firefox is only available for Mac OS X.

I can attest that FireFox will work with Windows, as I’ve ran it since I started college and have never owned a Mac. Dunno if maybe you clicked on a wrong link for a Mac version or not.

You can do this in Opera without installing any plugins.

Just click “Next” or “Previous” on the menu while in “New Posts.”

Of course, this is extrapolated from links in the page itself, so I suppose you could that with any browser if you could be arsed to scroll down to the bottom of the page.

…or you can just do it manually in your address bar.

The next thread after this one is this one in GQ.
