Quebec, secession and taxes

A college friend of mine considers this toxic stew: Saideman's Semi-Spew: The Nationalist Tax: Where Does It Go?

What do you think?

First of all, it’s indisputably true that Quebec has very high taxes.

Secondly, the article defends none of its other claims.

For one thing you can’t just say “Government services are worse here” and expect that to go unchallenged. How are they worse? In what measurable way? Sure, the author has a horror story about an ER; I can find horror stories about ERs from every province (or every state, if you like.)

Now, nothing the author says strikes me as being obvious false on its face; it might all be true. But it’s not supported by evidence, so I don’t know why I should regard his theories with any particular interest. Quebec’s budget is public information; it should not be hard to line it up side by side with Ontario’s, adjust for population, and figure out where the money’s going. That the author DOESN’T do that I find… well, not suspicious, really, but it’s not my job to finish his thesis.
