Question about 9-11

Grey, I get what you’re saying, and, just in case, I hope nobody construed my words to mean “our terrorism is worse than yours” or anything. The real point that you and others have raised, in addition to the sheer horror and death toll of 9-11, is the surprise and shock that people are still getting over. In a much larger way, this is similar to the atmosphere in Britain after the first IRA attacks in England (which caused, lest we forget, several appalling travesties of justice).

BTW, the British government construed the “guerilla” attacks as terrorism - just, I’m sure, as the US government would consider the attack on the Pentagon as such.

Funny you should say this. I still can’t look at the images of airliners hitting the WTC without thinking it is too surreal to have occurred.

McCarthy was bad; his tactics & methods were bad. One can oppose communism without resorting to McCarthyism.

Scene on european television during the US/British invasion of Iraq:

Baghdad: A women runs with a panel towards an american tank. The panel basically says, get the fuck out of this country. The US soldier begins a discussion in English with the woman. Then stops the discussion with the words: “Where have you been at 9/11?”

Seems that some americans are not over it yet, and that some soldiers in Iraq had been very angry at the Iraqis for personal reasons.

Glad to see my thread survived the weekend.

We nearly got hijacked into a discussion on poxy Northern Ireland politics. Just for everyones info - I have never met anyone in Ireland who gave a rats-ass about NI or who owned it - we are well and truly over it.

I’m glad to see that through the fog of nasty comments aimed at me for my un-american views, there are some good comments coming. Thanks all.

Hey, as soon as we stop learning in life, we may as well give up…

Jesus, I have. Do you not leave the Pale much?

jjimm - to be fair, I immediately shun anyone stupid enough to care about who owns NI. After 31 years of savagery, anyone who gives a fuck must be either a moron or a psychopath. Great if Ireland is 32 counties, and great if it’s not. Either way it’s not worth one life, let alone hundreds.

Sorry if this sounds like tree-hugging hippie crap, but violence is not the answer - ever.

See, as an outsider, I find it incredible that people can live less than two hours’ drive from a place in which appalling miseries are happening, and not be concerned or have an opinion one way or ther other. But that’s just my observation and opinion, and I don’t want to continue the hijack further.

jjimm, no worries. Point accepted (and stored for later thought…)

My name’s yojimbo I’m from Harolds Cross, Dublin. Nice to meet ya

Thanks for saving me the reply lads

** yojimbo ** - you’re named after a cool movie… but you’re not cool. I can’t go any further without taking you to the pit.

** ruadh ** don’t YOU start… Let’s end the Hijack. This is the subject for another Thread entirely. One that I would not read…

You said “I have never met anyone in Ireland who gave a rats-ass about NI or who owned it - we are well and truly over it”

Weel, I totally buy into the GFA and agree that the people in NI should decide on their future and I give a rats ass about NI in the same way I give a rats ass about the rest of Ireland(well not Cork  )

You don’t have to be a mad PIRA head to care about what happens you know?

BTW I don’t believe you’ve never met anyone like that. I’ve met loads of Republicans. Even yesterday I had to listen to 4 hours of rebel songs blasting out of the pub beside my Apt

No, you misunderstand me. As I said, it would be great if Ireland was 32 counties, but it’s not worth 1 life…

BTW, I have to laud your sentiments on “Cohk”… and Beamish…

LOL

As for the rebel songs, that was probably just for the Celtic match - and why would anyone care about the scottish premier league (apart from the Scots) ?

Anyway, defo. time to end this HIJACK…

Well most of the comments directed at you were due to your supremely self satisfied desire to discuss, with right minded people mind you, why these Americans can’t seem to get over it.

Why don’t you summarize your opinions based on the new views that have been aired?

Er, why should Americans get over it.

The terrorists certainly won’t get over what’s bothering them. Seems awfully strange to suggest that one side get over it while the other side is still planning and carrying out attacks.

** Grey ** what’s a “self satisfied desire” - I think you simply mean “desire”…

And “right minded people” - do you mean “like-minded people” ? or people who are colloquially "right in the head " ?

Grey, to summarise my opinion on YOUR views - you should listen more, talk less.

As for the others, I think that some of the posters seem to realise the irony of situation, others don’t. Just what I’d expect.

Tarantulas if you want to Pit me, go ahead, it’ll be a novel experience.

You have yet to engage anyone here in a debate. You’ve agreed with An Arky, expressed dismay at the fact the US has

and threatened Summertime with a Pitting.

Since you’ve had a fair number of replies that seems to run counter to your OP, how about you address them?
