question about airports and laptops

Should I expect to have to boot up my laptop at the x-ray walkthrough thing? I know I’ve had to prove my pager was real by making it beep and such, but I’ve not flown since I got my craptastic laptop.

I’m thinking that it’s a possibility, but probably not likely. Just wondering if anyone has been in this situation before.

In my experience, this depends on the airport and the country. I’ve flown to and from Tokyo, Kansai, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Chicago and Montreal since 9/11 and only in Montreal and Vancouver was I asked to boot my laptop up. Most places IIRC ran an explosive search, though.

I always have to take it out and run it through X Ray by itself, but haven’t booted up in a very long time, like years.

I have been on hundreds and hundreds of flights in many countries the past few years, and have never once been asked to turn it on since about 96. However, way back in 92-95 or so I was often asked this. Something must have changed in procedures, or perhaps the fact that maybe half the people on some flights have laptops now made it a time constraint issue.
