This morning I was awoken at about 4:30 AM by my dog jumping on my bed. He was getting my attention because he needed to be let outside. Naturally, instead of being grumpy because I’ve been awoken for my sleep, I praised him and put him outside, because that was what he was trained to do.
Later it occurred to me, that while he remembered his house training, did he remember waking me up and going outside a few hours earlier, the same as I had remembered waking up? In other words, while dogs have a long-term memory for learning, do they have a shorter-term memory of specific experiences?
