I’m trying to free up some disk space, and one of the places I’m trying to clean up is the gif’s and jpg’s that get downloaded automatically when I’m surfing the web.
I use IE5. when I do a search, I find a boatload of gifs and jpegs in Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\80T01ABC
However, when I try to delete the files from the **Search Results ** window, I get an error message. It reads: Cannot Delete File: Cannot read from the source file or disk.
When I go into the directory 80T01ABC, no files appear (i.e. the directory appears to be empty). I have the settings for all directories to Show hidden files, so they should show up.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of these files so I can free up some disk space?
Temporary Internet Filas are not stored in the disk as separate files within the OS structure. Windows Explorer may show them as such but that is not the way they are stored and you should not mess with them using Win Explorer. The correct way is to open Internet Explorer and go to Tools, Internet Options, and do your management there.
sailor,
I have done what you said before I asked the question. I deleted both the on-line and off-line content from IE as you suggest (through the Tools, Internet Options feature). The problem is that after I do this, and do another quick search on *.gif or *.jpg, all of the files are still in these random-named directories under Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\80T01ABC
My dad deletes them using XTree Gold, an old DOS program similar to Windows Explorer. Of course, you’ll need a way to boot to a command prompt for this to work.
