Question about John Varley (sci-fi writer)

A friend of mine insists that John Varley passed away recently, and I cannot find anything on the net that helps me refute or confirm this claim.

I sure hope not. I’m waiting for another Golden Globe or Steel Beach from this man, as they are two of my favorite books.

Anybody know?

And if this is true, I’d appreciate a link to info.

It would have to be very recently indeed. His official website has just been launched, featuring a brief note puported to be from the man himself, and dated Dec 7, 2003:

He has just released a novel called “Red Thunder”, which does not seem to be in the “eight worlds” universe. I’d like another of those, too.

Thanks! Since I haven’t spoken to my friend since November 30th, I’d say Varley’s in the clear.
