Question about Mad Men wardrobe

Ever notice that Pete always seems to wear a blue suit (almost light blue) and Cosgrove seems to always wear a brownish one?

Mad Men seems to take considerable effort to get small details correct, which got me to wondering: was it common for men to wear same colored suits regularly, meaning a color scheme they’d favor?

My Dad started out in business back in those days and he always alternated his suits; one color one day, then another the next (all mostly a charcoal gray or dark blue or light gray, with patterns varying).

I understand suites aren’t cheap (nor were they 50 years ago ?) but wearing the same one over and over seems unlikely given the characters.

Anyone else notice this?

Doesn’t Don always wear a dark suit, of basically the same color?

My father had a number of suits ranging in color from dark gray, to dark blue, to black. Most people probably couldn’t tell the difference unless they saw him in bright light. I’m not sure if even owned a brown suit.

When my brother-in-law worked for IBM, the standard dress for all sales employees was a dark blue suit.

Even in the 1980s, when I had Ford as a client, I showed up at headquarters one day in a light grey, European-cut suit. Very stylish. The next day I got feedback that I wasn’t appropriately dressed.

Suit etiquette in post-war America was as intricate as a Japanese tea ceremony, and just as hard to figure out.
