I never got around to seeing Peter Jackson’s King Kong last year, for reasons that would be otiose to rehearse. But my sister and brother in law were playing it the other day, and I saw a bit of the Kong vs. the T-rexes fight, which looked interesting enough to get my attention, and so I borrowed the disc.
Anyway, I watched it last night, and as I watched it seemed to me that Mr. Jackson had a somewhat different take on Kong’s motivations than the other directors who’ve done the Ann/Kong love story. Specifically, it seemed to me that Kong’s actions towards Ann were more maternal than anything else. I started thinking this when we saw the skeletons of Kong’s relatives. The way Kong handled Ann, it seemed to me, might very well have been meant to give the impression that, rather than a horny and misguided simian, this was instead an bereaved mother desperate to have 1 last chance with a child. Did anyone else have a similar impression?
I watched King Kong for the first time last week.
The extract thought you descibed came into my mind when I saw Kong pick up Anne and place her on his/her shoulder!
Another thought I couldn’t get out of my head during that film: gigantic man-eating penes! EEEEEEWWWWW!!!
And now I shall court the wrath of Gaudere:
Oh my god! I EXTRACTED a thought from Mouse_Maven! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it!

I’ve never seen any version of King Kong, but the maternal instinct seems more plausible than the instinct to mate with things that you can clutch in your palm.
For the purposes of this discussion, we’ll ignore the chicken-raping billygoats.
It’s addressed on the extended cut’s special features that it wasn’t so much maternal as familial. Loneliness at being the last of the apes on Skull Island and then finding someone who was willing to share some time and love with Kong as something different than just a sacrifice.
Ah-ha! This explains where all my IQ points and wit have gone. They must find you more interesting.
