Yeah I know, strange place to ask a question! But I figured I might get a closer-to-accurate answer here. I glanced at r/all and saw a post from r/The_Donald right on top: “The media and my fellow Americans treat me like I am a TERRORIST because I support Trump … etc.”.
I read and it honestly had a hard time figuring it out if it was supposed to be satirical or if people really said / did things like that. I have Asperger’s so sometimes sarcasm / satire / truth-massaging go right over my head. It just seemed so … bizarre. But sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, right??
Rule one of Reddit right now: block, ignore, and avoid /r/The_Donald. It is the home of Trump supporters, real and not-so-real. It’s an utter cesspool and has been all year. I don’t think even the posters themselves know any more whether or not they mean half of the shit they post.
It’s a combination of genuine sentiment, deliberate phrasing for clickbait, and a culture that’s built upon audacity and shock. This applies to a lot of other parts of Reddit. There’s also some overlap with places like /r/TheRedPill and /r/MensRights, as well as former subreddits like /r/FatPeopleHate. The culture of Reddit itself has a number of decidedly misogynistic/racist/transphobic over-and-undertones, which I’d go into more, but then that becomes talking about my research, and it’s just depressing.
Much of mainstream Reddit isn’t that bad; I’ve noticed a notable uptick in quality in recent months. But there are parts that are absolutely vile, and sometimes it leaks into the rest of Reddit.
So, uh, TL;DR–/r/the_donald is as real as anything on Reddit, and pretty much as vile as it appears.
The thing about /r/the_donald that I noticed is that it seems rather isolated. Their viewpoints don’t seem to be represented elsewhere. That’s not true for many of the other more hateful subreddits. The persecution fantasy is there, but it’s just about being called racist or sexist, not something about being a Trump supporter.
Any time I see anyone in the main subreddits talking about how they were a Trump supporter, their post is heavily downvoted.
Yep when you browse r/all you’re going to see everything from Reddit including extreme political views, porn, and all sorts of asshattery. It’s good to skim once in a while but I wouldn’t make it a daily browse.
Best way to do Reddit is to subscribe to all the subreddits you like, then when you visit reddit.com you should see mostly/all your subscribed subreddits on the home page.
