What do religions think of each other? When a baptist minister and a mormon minister talk to each other, are they thinking “Boy is this guy misleading his people, obviosly my faith is the right one…”? Does a baptist minister think god speaks to a mormon minister, and visa versa? Does the pope have an opinion of other religions?
It depends both on the religion and the individual. There isn’t a single answer to your question. To address your specific example, There certainly are a lot of fundamentalist and evangelical denominations which believe that LDS is a flat-out false religion. The odds are that a Baptist minister would think that a Mormon Bishop was (pehaps with all good intentions) misleading his people.
There are also more ecuminical denominations and individuals who would not see doctrinal divisions as particularly important.
I would imagine its a bit like politicians, rant and rave at each others clear lunacies, but meet in the bar afterwards and buy each other drinks!
most clerics are educated people, they all say tolerance is the thing, maybe they believe that.
Hardly. Religious leaders’ rhetoric ranges from peace, love, and brotherhood to Fred Phelps style frothing hate filled lunacy. For that matter, not all of them are educated; anyone can start or lead a religion, including illiterates.
Why does this thread remind me of that old South Park episode where in a bunch of people die and they get sent off to Hell. When they get there they are met by the Administraitor:
"Hello guy’s in case you’re wondering. You are indeed dead and in hell.
“ME!? but I was a devout Catholic.”
“Nope sorry, you go to hell”
“But what about me? I was a Babtist?”
“Nope, sorry, you go to hell too”
“Well, then who makes it to Heavan?”
“Umm, The Mormons, yeah, it appears the Mormons had it right all along.”
IANA Latter-Day Saint (Mormon), but that is just not LDS doctrine. In LDS doctrine, only truly wicked people & LDS apostates can go to Eternal Hell. All non-LDS’ers can go into the middle/Terrestrial or lower/Telestial Kingdoms- the latter still being considered quite marvelous compared to this world. Good LDS’ers enter the Celestrial Kingdom, the highest degree of which is exaltation to deity.
noooo…you’re kidding!
Hey! Community of Christ believes that too. Is plagiarising doctrine a sin
Not since the CoC’s original name was the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, founded by Emma Smith and her son Joseph Smith III.
Hmmmm that just changes who did the plagerizing doesn’t it?
Since both the LDS & the CoC credit Joseph Smith as having recieved the revelation about the three Kingdoms and the Degrees of Glory, there is no plagiarism- just a dispute as to which line carries the true Presidency-Prophethood.
Ahhhhhh… mystery solved.
Judaism teaches, and has since Talmudic times (~500 AD), that the righteous of all nations have a place in the World to Come. I’m sure there are some Jews who disagree with that, but in general Jews wouldn’t have a problem with a clergy member of another faith unless they were trying to convert Jews or trying to get their congregation to do something evil. Most Jews aren’t particularly interested in trying to get members of other faiths to convert to Judaism, either (though many rabbis will convert someone if the prospective convert comes to them and asks).
The Pope being aware of other religions and human, I imagine he does have opinions about other religions.
Does a catholic minister believe god speaks to a protestant minister, and visa versa?
Likely, but in the “small still voice” sense rather than the “Joan of Arc” sense (and if only to convince him to switch sides!). And both believe the other is getting some theological points wrong, but probably don’t begrudge the other their opinions.
Unless they’re bigots, which is possible.
That reminds me of this great routine by Rowen Atkinson, as the Devil : “Ah, the Christians. Sorry, the Jews were right.”
If the catholic minister believes that god and the protastant minister are communicating with each other and visa versa, why doesn’t god tell one of them that their religion is misgided?
