If one decides to begin to study, say, different types of psychology, sociology, or other such things, and they read many books, write papers on what they have learned, etc… what can come from it? Would it just be a primer for going to school, or can someone actually do anything with the knowledge that one learns on their own, in terms of business, etc…?
Also, what are some websites to begin to dive into the basics of such subjects, and other such things?
I’m not quite sure I understand the question, but; what is to stop one from learning just as much on their own as they can from a teacher? Nothing. I’ve learned a lot more from my own studies than I ever have in school. All you have to do is find a textbook, start off slow, then really get into it. Its probably boring though, since you don’t have anyone to bounce ideas off of or ask questions of, that is why you can just come here.
…and thus, I’m here, lol. I didn’t really know how to phrase the question, so I just put it the best I could. Here lately, I feel as if I really want to learn something new, something deep, and something that would prove to be usefull to me as a person, and to help me grow into a more deeper and insightfull person. I don’t really know where to start, but hey, that’s the point, finding a starting posistion I suppose.
I don’t have money for school (I’m 22), so I am wanting so bad to try to do something on my own, if you know what I mean.
If you want my advice, and this is from a secular standpoint, the place to start is the bible. Read it, read some books about it, and I think your on your way. If you know the basis of the bible and many of the back story, its easily appliable to all sorts of things in life rather it be impressing a girl or just using as a guide. The lack of knowlege about the bible these days is amazing, and it can be very helpful. Then if I were you I wouldn’t concern myself with pyschology and theory, just read the classics. Go to some websites and find classic books and start there;you will find many modern movies allude to them in various ways.
Some educational institutions may offer credit by exam. Offhand I can only think of this as applying towards foreign language proficiency, but you never know. Of course, you need not study something you can get a degree in in order to get satisfaction or fulfillment out of it.
You’d have a better chance of finding useful websites if you decided on a subject to study first.
You are exactly right about the Bible, as I did study it very much so for a little over three years straight, I actually wanted to become a “teacher” of the Bible, but lost the desire for that goal. Great idea, thanks!
As for psychology, I don’t know why I am so interested in that one.
I am an aspiring songwriter and screenwriter, so I have the movies covered, lol.
One thing I love about the internet is that for almost any subject that you could imagine, its incredibly easy to find a person willing to “mentor” you if you have the right attitude. People who are genuinely passionate about there field love to have somebody who shares the same interest and will actively help you explore and develop. And best of all, I cant think of any better place to start than the SDMB.
