Saw this movie over the weekend, and liked it quite a bit. It was good to see Denzel playing a character that was neither a real person/historical figure or morally righteous. Y’know, a bad guy.
However, a bit of the plot left me stumped. Why would Alonzo (Washington) choose to strand Hoyt - ostensibly to get him killed - (Ethan Hawke) with the Hispanic gangsters, when he knew that Lety, the girl Hoyt saved from imminent rape, had cousins in their gang that she would quite possibly have alerted to the events in order to gain revenge on the crackhead would-be rapists? If he wanted to ensure that Hoyt would get killed so he’d be an ideal patsy, seems to me he would’ve picked some folks that would have no reason to spare Hoyt’s life.
Hopefully this is clear…of course, any other topics re: Training Day are welcome.
I liked this movie, though it got pretty ridiculous towards the end.
I think Denzel left Ethan there because he was beginning to realize that Ethan wasn’t going to go along with his plan, and was figuring everything out. Thus he needed to have him killed so he could get the money to the Russians in time.
I don’t think Denzel ever made the connection between the girl and the Hispanic gang.
I got why Denzel wanted Ethan killed. But the girl said, while Denzel was kicking the crackhead’s asses, she had cousins in whatever organization, and he asked her to repeat what she said. That’s why it seemed so odd to me.
Hrmm, I didn’t remember that part. Perhaps that’s why Denzel pretended not to notice the rape in the first place until Ethan saw it himself and insisted on the rescue.
