Right now, I am in a position where a bath, shower or bath from the sink is not an option. Most of my body is taken care of as far as being cleansed. However I still have girlie bits that need to be cleaned.
I’ve tried the product I use on my body and Summer’s Eve Cleansing Cloths for Sensitive Skin and ended up with the opposite effect of clean. I somehow felt less clean.
Would someone please recommend a brand of wipes for sensitive skin to help until I am well enough to resume a normal bathing routine?
Thanks oodles.
Do you have a care giver? If so, I would ask for some hot water in an appropriate container (like one of the sponge bath tubs) a wash cloth that has been wetted with a little soap, and some privacy. You can wash then rinse the cloth in the water and wipe again. Is this possible for you?
What about flushable wet wipes sold next to the toilet paper? I’ve had good luck with those for feminine hygiene. If you need something portable, I recommend the individually wrapped wipes made by Kotex or Always. They are sold in the feminine hygiene aisle, but can be hard to find. I’ve also tried the Summer’s Eve wipes and they are terrible.
I use the Always (or are they Playtex?) wipes and I have very sensitive skin, and have not noticed anything negative.
However, I’ve never been in a situation to use them more than one day at a time so I couldn’t tell you how they are long-term.
Then again…I trust trust Always (or Playtex?) to make things that I use in and around my girly bits so I implicitly trust them for the wipes too. Summer’s Eve, sure I guess I should trust them to make such a product too but I don’t trust their “flagship” product as it is!
When I had surgery and couldn’t shower, but was still able to make it into the bathroom to use the toilet, I would use the toilet and then use baby wipes and a plastic squirt bottle of warm water to cleanse myself. Really weird at first, but felt much better than the using wipes alone.
For the rest of me, I’d use the baby wipes and then a warm wet washcloth afterwards to get rid of the sticky feeling from the wipes.
Good luck and I hope you find something that works soon!
ghm has it - you need to be able to rinse. One of those squirty ketchup bottles works very well. You can get them at the dollar store.
Also, I highly recommend the Walmart brand ultra-sensitive baby wipes. I use them for everything still, and my child is 7 years old now, LOL! They were my savior after the c-section when a normal shower was just impossible.
Rinsing with water helps, but if that’s not an option, then baby wipes. Preferably the unscented kind. Anything sold in the “feminine hygiene” section just reeks, and often cause vulvitis or UTIs by irritation or knocking the pH out of whack.
If it’s going to be going on for some time (say, more than a week), then you may want to use castille soap wipes. You don’t have to rinse with them, although some people do. These are slightly superior to baby wipes in terms of meeting an adult’s perineal pH.
If incontinence is also an issue, then consider using a perineal barrier wipe. These have liquid silicone in them, so they leave a very thin moisture barrier on your skin, which can help to prevent skin breakdown from sitting or laying on a moist surface. But that means that some people think they feel icky and not perfectly clean. If you are incontinent and bedridden, it’s totally worth the trade off (better icky than skin breakdown!) but if you are not incontinent, you probably don’t need them.
Thank you to everyone who replied. The SO went to the store and picked up some suggested items and is looking for some of the longer term items if they are needed.
I really appreciate the help.
If you’re ever in Houston and need nail polish help, look me up! (My version of I’ll buy you a beer. )
I was going to suggest Jcloths, with warm water. They are incredibly soft when wet.
I used them when caregiving for someone who’s skin was becoming too fragile for regular washcloths. They really are very soft and warm, easily washed and reused, at very reasonable cost.
Kandoo’s is a brand of flushable wipes for babies/kids. They make a sensitive, perfume-free, wipe. I LOVE them! Great for the butt and lady bits. No irritation, and no slimy, perfumey, after feeling.
But I also second the warm-water after the wipe approach. After the birth of my son, they gave me a plastic squirt bottle to spray the bits after going to the bathroom for the first couple of weeks. It was weird at first, but it became a standard part of my routine when I started getting my period again. Also, it rocked when I was having a hemorrhoid and didn’t have time for regular sitz-baths.
